First Meeting

ERIE, Pa. – After an extended layoff the Gannon women's wrestling team returns to action on Thursday, January 26 hosting Lock Haven in a matchup of two top-ten teams. The Golden Knights are ranked eighth in the latest NWCA NCAA Women's Wrestling rankings while Lock Haven is a step behind in ninth place.

The night will begin with five seniors recognized as part of Senior Night festivities. The five seniors who will make their final home appearances include Amara Devericks (San Clemente, Calif./Corona), Niloly Dos santos, Stephanie Floor (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Leone), Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union), and Daniela Morales Dardon (Palmdale, Calif./Highland).

This marks the first-ever dual meeting between the two programs, with Gannon showing a 5-4 record and Lock Haven at 9-3. Both teams competed in the NWCA National Duals on January 6-7. The Golden Knights finished in eighth place while going 2-3. They defeated No. 15 Emmanuel, 38-9, along with suffering losses to top-ranked King (34-12), No. 5 Augsburg (27-18), and 14th-ranked Sacred Heart (24-23). Lock Haven came in ninth at the National Duals.

That was the last time both teams competed. They will now meet on the mat for the first time in women's wrestling.

Head coach Breonnah Neal has a young lineup spiced with some experience. Four Golden Knights appear in the latest NWCA rankings, led by sophomore Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll). Moccia is ranked fourth at 109 lbs. with a 15-5 record that includes 10 falls. She earned All-American honors as a freshman thanks to a seventh-place finish, ending the year with a 23-9 record. She placed third at the ESU Open and sixth at the Missouri Valley Open earlier this year. Moccia is expected to pair off against Lock Haven's Kaelani Shufeldt, a freshman who is 18-1 with 11 wins by bonus points. 

Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) is next, ranked sixth at 170 lbs. The junior has enjoyed a solid return to the mat after not wrestling since the 2020-21 season. She owns a 10-7 record and has a second-place finish to her credit at the ESU Open.
 
Gonzalez is one of two Golden Knights ranked at 170 lbs., with Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) a spot behind her in seventh place. Helm has an 11-7 record and came in third at the ESU Open.

Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) has been in and out of the NWCA rankings this year, and the junior is currently ranked eighth at 136 lbs. with a 10-6 record and seven falls. She earned a fourth-place finish at the Adrian Open. She recently was named the NWCA Wrestler of the Month for December.
 
Neal has relied on a solid recruiting class with four freshmen seeing considerable action. Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) leads the way with a 14-8 record while competing at 143 lbs. Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) has been another regular at 136 lbs., compiling an 11-10 record with nine falls.

In addition to Shufeldt, Lock Haven's lineup includes a second ranked wrestler in Grace Stem. The freshman is ranked third at 143 lbs. with a 15-4 record.
