CLARION, Pa. – The Gannon University women's basketball team's winning streak has reached a dozen games.
Coach
Cleve Wright's No. 14 Golden Knights won their 12th game in a row overall and improved to 18-2 overall with an emphatic 71-46 victory over Clarion University on Monday evening at Tippin Gymnasium.
GU's winning streak is its longest since the 2013-14 team reeled off 17 straight victories to start the season. The Knights defeated the Golden Eagles for 30th time in the past 31 meetings as GU improved to 47-15 all time against Clarion.
The victory was also Gannon's 10th in a row in the PSAC West as the Knights stayed alone in first place in the Western Division with a 10-2 mark. It was also their fifth straight road win.
They have won their past three games by an average of 27 points per game and have an average scoring margin of 71.0 to 53.4 this season.
Senior guard
Emma Wright (Fairview, Pa./Talawanda) sank three 3-point field goals and finished with 17 points to lead another balanced scoring effort for Gannon on Monday night.
Senior forward Sam Pirosko, GU's leading scorer on the season, added 12 points and moved up one spot on the school's career scoring list. She moved her career total to 1,221 while passing Linda Hunley (1,214 points, 1980-83) for the 15th spot in program history.
Senior point guard
Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) and freshman shooting guard
Bri Claxon (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) added points apiece for the Knights.
A pair of senior forwards fueled Gannon's 40-28 advantage on the boards.
Madison Demski (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) paced GU with eight rebounds, while
Delaney Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) had seven.
Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) led Gannon with six assists.
Gannon had another strong start, racing to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter before taking a 39-28 advantage into halftime. The Knights outscored the Golden Eagles 38-18 in the second half.
Gannon turned in their usual strong shooting effort, connecting on 29-of-61 field-goal attempts for 47.5 percent. That included an 11-of-26 effort from 3-point range, good for 42.3 percent. Wright and McKinney each made three 3-pointers, and senior guard
Ali Benim (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) hit two 3-pointers for six points.
Oddly, the Knights shot just two free throws in the game as Pirosko sank both of her attempts late in the fourth quarter.
Gannon has a one-game lead over Pitt-Johnstown (9-3) in the PSAC West and a two-game lead over IUP and Edinboro, who are both 8-4 in the conference.
Before facing Edinboro on Hall of Fame Day on Saturday, Gannon will host Seton Hill (13-8, 6-6) in a PSAC West game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Highmark Events Center.
