Gannon women's soccer team dominates 2nd half, beats rival Edinboro in PSAC West matchup

Golden Knights score 3 goals in 2nd half to defeat Fighting Scots at Sox Harrison Stadium

EDINBORO, PA – The Gannon University women's soccer team erupted for three second-half goals and the defense collected a shutout as the Golden Knights beat Edinboro 3-0 on Wednesday evening in a PSAC West game.

Senior midfielder/defender Leah Bermudez (Milton, Ontario/Jean Vanier Catholic) and sophomore midfielders Jamie Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) and Paige Taylor (Robina, Australia/Emmanuel College) scored goals after a scoreless first half at Sox Harrison Stadium.

Gannon improved to 3-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the PSAC West. The Golden Knights have gone 3-0-1 since losing their season opener.

Edinboro dropped to 0-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference.

Gannon opened the scoring early in the second half when sophomore midfielder Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler) sent a corner kick in front of the goal, and a charging Bermudez headed the ball into the right side of the net at the 48:30 mark. Boden got the assist on the goal.

Seneca struck at the 72:02 mark when she made an impressive individual play, breaking loose momentarily out front and booting a 25-yard shot past a diving Edinboro goalie into the left corner of the goal.

About 3 minutes later, Taylor gathered a pass from Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria), broke free and sent a shot at the goalie, who blocked it. However, the loose ball came right back to Taylor, who kicked it past the goalie into the right side of the goal. Taylor entered the game as a reserve but finished with three of Gannon's six shots on goal.

Gannon senior goalie Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) got the shutout by making three saves, including a spectacular, leaping save on an Edinboro shot toward the top of the crossbar with Gannon leading 1-0 with 21 minutes to go.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Clarion at McConnell Family Stadium.
