Dales Scores First Career Goal, August Registers Second Career Shutout as Gannon Defeats Clarion 2-0

Bermudez adds other goal with assist from Dales

ERIE, Pa. Leah Bermudez (Milton, Ontario/Jean Vanier Catholic) and Sam Dales scored goals less than three minutes apart in the second half to lead the Gannon women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout over Clarion on Saturday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights improved to 4-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the PSAC West while Clarion fell to 1-5-0 and 0-4-0 in PSAC West action.

Gannon is now undefeated in its last five matches with four wins, all by shutout, and a tie and has now posted back-to-back shutouts. Clarion, meanwhile, continues to struggle to score and has now been shut out in the last five matches.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, and neither team had found the back of the net until Bermudez scored her second goal of the season with Dales assisting on the goal at the 63:32 mark. The goal came from Dales' excellent service from a corner kick, finding the head of Bermudez, who was able to bounce it past Seton Hill goalkeeper Alex Velez.

The Golden Knights needed less than two minutes to score an insurance goal--with Dales doing the honors this time--putting home a rebound from a Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) attempt that ricocheted off Velez. The first career goal for the senior at 65:51 made it 2-0 Gannon.

The two goals were more than enough for Jordan August (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown). The senior turned aside four shots for her second career shutout while making her first start in goal this season. Velez finished with 10 saves while facing 31 shots by Gannon. The Golden Eagles finished the afternoon with 10 shots. Both teams had four corner kicks.

After playing six times in the span of 17 days Gannon will get a bit of a break before returning to action next Saturday, September 17. The Golden Knights host Seton Hill in a PSAC West match at 5:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
