Women's volleyball team sweeps Slippery Rock to remain in first place in PSAC West

Sam Deinek's 17 kills fuel Gannon's 5th consecutive conference win

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – The Gannon University women's volleyball stayed unbeaten in the PSAC West with a three-set sweep of Slippery Rock University on Friday night at Morrow Field House.

Sophomore outside hitter Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) had 17 kills and finished with a team-best 17.5 points as the Golden Knights beat The Rock 25-20, 25-23, 25-21.

Coach Matt Darling's team improved to 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the PSAC West. Gannon is tied for first place with Clarion going into a road match on Saturday against Seton Hill.

Although Deinek led the way, Gannon had solid efforts from several other players. Junior outside hitter Madde Blake (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) collected nine kills and 13 digs, senior middle blocker Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) had eight kills, and freshman setter Bengisu Arslan (Ankara, Turkey) contributed 37 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore libero Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led Gannon's defensive effort with 23 digs.

Slippery Rock dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

"Tonight was a great battle with Slippery Rock, who matched us point for point for most of the night," Darling said. "I'm really proud of the team for their effort and resilience, and we're happy to get out with the win tonight."

Gannon will visit Seton Hill in Greensburg on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the last of four consecutive road matches. The Golden Knights will then prepare for a pair of big matches next weekend at home against Clarion and IUP.
