JOHNSTOWN, PA – The Gannon University women's soccer team's unbeaten streak came to an end on the road on Wednesday.
The Golden Knights saw their eight-game streak without a loss come to a halt as Pitt-Johnstown scored in the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory over Gannon in a PSAC West game at Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
It was the first time this season that Gannon had been shut out as the Knights slipped to 6-2-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the PSAC West. Gannon and Mercyhurst are still tied for first place with 17 points in the standings.
Third-place UPJ improved to 4-3-1 in the conference and 4-4-2 overall.
The Mountain Cats scored the game's only goal at the 17:17 mark of the first half when a UPJ player sent a long crossing pass from left to right. A Gannon defender attempted to clear the ball just in front of the goal, but UPJ's Sophia Lamesta was there to garner the rebound. Her left-footed kick from 8 yards found the top, middle of the goal.
Gannon finished with a 14-13 edge in shot, and UPJ had a slight 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria), the Golden Knights' leading scorer on the season, finished with seven shots, including five shots on goal. No other Gannon player had more than one shot on goal.
