Fails Accounts for Both Goals as Gannon Shuts Out IUP on Homecoming

ERIE, Pa. – Senior forward Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) accounted for both of Gannon's goals as the women's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Indiana (PA) in a PSAC West match on Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium. The Homecoming victory boosted the Golden Knights to 7-2-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the PSAC West, pulling into a tie with Mercyhurst for first place. IUP dropped to 2-3-4.

The two teams met in Indiana, Pa. on September 3 and battled to a 2-2 tie. This time around Gannon took advantage of an early goal with a strong wind in their favor and then added a second goal into the wind early in the second half. That was enough to support the shutout goalkeeping of Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Jordan August (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) as Gannon posted its fifth shutout of the season.

Fails gave Gannon the lead with a terrific individual effort that showed off her speed and accuracy. A little over 6 minutes into the game she took a beautiful pass from Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler) just past midfield and broke free down the left side. She cut toward the goal and blasted a shot over IUP goalkeeper Samantha Gildner.

At the 56:36 mark, just over 10 minutes into the second half, Fails scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season. She made a run down the right side, cut to the center and booted a left-footed kick to the right side of the net. Logan Nicklas (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) set up the play with a nice pass.

Gannon ended with a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots as IUP pressured the Golden Knights late in the match with their wind in their favor. Each team had six shots on goal. Gannon had three corner kicks compared to one for the Crimson Hawks.

Solymosi played the first half in goal and registered one save, while August played the second half and had five saves.

Gannon returns to action on Wednesday, October 5 with the first of back-to-back road games. The Golden Knights play at Slippery Rock at 4:00 p.m., the start of a stretch of four away matches in five games.
