Gannon Announces 2022 Football Schedule

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon University head football coach Erik Raeburn today announced the 2022 football schedule. The third-year head coach led Gannon to a 5-6 record a year ago, the most wins since the 2017 season.

The Golden Knights will play six home games at what will be a refurbished McConnell Family Stadium. The multi-purpose facility will receive a new artificial surface along with other improvements this summer.

"The 2022 schedule will be very difficult," admitted Raeburn, who will enter his third year at the helm. "Our non-conference opponent finished 2021 with an 8-2 record and the PSAC is the most competitive conference from top to bottom in the country. We will face an incredible challenge each and every week."

As always, Gannon will face a very rigorous PSAC West schedule with the likes of conference powers Slippery Rock, Indiana(Pa.) and Cal. In addition, the Golden Knights square off against their two local rivals in Mercyhurst and Edinboro.

Gannon's three PSAC East crossover contests are home games against West Chester and Shippensburg, along with an away game at Millersville.

The Golden Knights will debut in 2022 against a very strong Charleston(WV) team under the lights, hosting the Eagles on Thursday, September 1. Charleston was 8-2 a year ago. They then head out on the highway for the first of their three PSAC crossover games, playing at Millersville (2-9) on Saturday, September 10. It will mark the first meeting with the Marauders since 2017.

The following week West Chester makes the long journey to Erie to play at Gannon on Saturday, September 17. The two teams meet for the first time since 2019, with the Golden Knights seeking a first-ever win against the Rams. WCU has won the previous four meetings and was 6-5 a year ago.

Gannon wraps up September while starting a stretch of three road games in four weeks with a trip to Clarion (0-10) to open up PSAC West action on Saturday, September 24. The Golden Knights return home to celebrate Homecoming on Saturday, October 1 hosting Seton Hill (5-6) in a 12 p.m. kickoff at McConnell Family Stadium.

The Seton Hill game also begins a stretch of three straight Homecoming contests for Gannon, as the Golden Knights are also the Homecoming opponents for road games at Edinboro (4-6) and Slippery Rock the next two weeks. They renew the local rivalry with Edinboro on Saturday, October 8, with a contest at SRU on Saturday, October 15. The Rock was 9-3 last year and made the NCAA Division II Playoffs after losing to Kutztown in the PSAC Championship game.

Gannon ends the 2022 campaign with three home contests in the final four weeks, beginning with the lone set of back-to-back games. The first is a renewal of the crosstown rivalry with Mercyhurst (4-7) with the Niagara Cup at stake. The Lakers reclaimed the trophy a year ago with a 24-13 win. The two meet on Saturday, October 22.

The Golden Knights wrap up the regular season with three games against teams that combined for a 25-6 record. The first two weeks showcase two of the PSAC West's powerhouse programs in Indiana(Pa.) and Cal. The Crimson Hawks visit McConnell Family Stadium for the first time since 2018 on Saturday, October 29 and come off a 7-3 finish in 2021.

A trip to Cal follows to start November on Saturday, November 5. A strong Vulcans squad was denied a trip to the NCAA Playoffs despite a sterling 9-1 finish. The regular season concludes with a home game on Saturday, November 12 against a Shippensburg team that also won nine games while ending the year at 9-2. The PSAC crossover contest will mark the first meeting with the Raiders since 2017.

As always, the final week's schedule could be adjusted depending on the teams that qualify for the PSAC Championship that week.
