Perez Captures Two Medals During Inaugural Showing for Gannon at USMC Women's Nationals

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Five members of the Gannon women's wrestling team competed in the USMC Women's Nationals last weekend. Head coach Breonnah Neal was accompanied by Stephanie Floor (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Leone), Anya Knappenberger (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur), Julianna Moccia, Kat Pendergrass (South Hill, Va./South Granville(NC)), and Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua). Knappenberger, Moccia, Pendergrass and Perez competed in the U20 age division, with the foursome joined by Floor in the U23 age division.

Selections were made based on their final results from the NCWWC National Championships this past spring. The USMC Women's Nationals top three finishers are invited to join Team USA for training.

The Golden Knights tallied three medals in the U20 age division and one medal in the U23 age division. Perez showcased her talents by placing in both divisions. She finished fourth in the U23 age division and seventh in the U20 while competing at 59 kg. Moccia and Knappenberger, a pair of freshmen, took sixth at 50 kg. and eighth at 59 kg., respectively. Floor (65 kg.) and Pendergrass (50 kg.) both battled in tough divisions and did not place.

This was the first showcase of Gannon women's wrestling as a team on the USA Wrestling circuit. "We are very proud of the performance of these athletes and saw outstanding work ethic and commitment while training and competing in this event," related Neal, who completed her first year as Gannon's coach earlier this year. "Having the number of medalists we did says a lot about the current talent and bright future ahead. We look forward to continued success on the mat and leadership from this group of athletes in the upcoming season."

Perez shared Neal's excitement on the tournament results, "We are grateful for this opportunity of growth and competition against elite athletes from across the country. This weekend has been one of growth and served as a great springboard into the next year. This summer we will be fine tuning our skills and training for an even better upcoming season."
