Hess Continues Torrid Stretch as Gannon Rallies to Win Game One at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --- For the second straight day Gannon rallied to pick up a win over Slippery Rock on the diamond. This time it was much more dramatic. The Golden Knights scored six times in the top of the seventh inning to shock Slippery Rock, 7-4, in the game opener. Gannon scored five times in the last inning in game number two, but this time the Golden Knights fell by a 13-6 score.

The four-game split over the last two days leaves Gannon at 16-9 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC West. SRU is now 18-8 and 5-7 in league play.

Little over a week ago Ian Hess' (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) batting average was under the Mendoza Line. The redshirt junior is now hitting .269 after going 11-for-21 over the last six games. Even more impressive, the first baseman has driven in 12 runs while hitting five runs during that stretch. He homered in both games on Saturday and hit three homers in four games against SRU. Hess now has 24 career home runs, ranking second all-time at Gannon, with six coming this season. He is chasing Nate Cardy, who finished his career with 27 home runs.

Gannon will play a nine-inning non-conference game on Tuesday, April 12 at Ashland. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.

GAME 1 – Gannon 7, Slippery Rock 4
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning an Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) home run, then did not score again until the seventh inning. SRU scored three runs in the bottom of the third and held that 3-1 lead in need of three outs for the win. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) opened the seventh with a single and moved up on a trey Zeroski walk. A sacrifice moved the runners up to second and third. Hess' RBI single pulled Gannon to within 3-2, and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) tied the game with single to right field. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) walked, but a strikeout left the Knights with two outs. Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a three-run double to right center. Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) moved Rakow up with a single and he would score on an error by the catcher as ten men went to the plate. Hess ended the day 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Wetherholt was 2-for-4 and Rakow was 1-for-4 with the three runs batted in. Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin Area) improved to 2-1 as he came in in the fourth inning and threw three innings. He allowed a run with a walk and two strikeouts. Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) came in with an out in the seventh and runners on first and third. A run would score on a sacrifice fly, but Reitebach retired the next batter on a groundout to record his first save of the season.

GAME 2 – Slippery Rock 13, Gannon 6
The Rock pushed across five unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning after Hess hit a home run in the first inning for the second straight game. SRU would tack on a run in the second and three more in the fourth and  fifth innings, plus a single run in the sixth. Gannon took advantage of the wildness of the Slippery Rock staff to score five runs in the final inning as 11 batters stepped to the plate. Pinch hitter Alex Altmire (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) drove in one run with a double, and Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) walked with the bases loaded to plate another run. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) drove in a pair with a single to right. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) was hit by a pitch twice in the inning.
