Hess Drives in Five Runs in Game Two as Gannon Splits Twinbill with Slippery Rock

ERIE, Pa.Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) drove in five runs as Gannon rallied from an early two-run deficit to hand Slippery Rock an 8-5 defeat and earn a split of Friday's doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium. SRU claimed a 5-3 decision in the first game. Gannon is now 15-8 overall and 6-4 in the PSAC West, while SRU is now 17-7 and 4-6, respectively. The two teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader at Slippery Rock on Saturday.

Both games featured top pitchers for the two teams, with three of the four rankings among the leaders in ERA in the conference. The first game featured a mixture of weather, including rain and sleet. A shower delayed the game 25 minutes at the start, and lightning forced close to a 50-minute delay in the sixth inning. While still cold, the sunshine came out in game two and the Gannon bats came alive.

GAME 1 – Slippery Rock 5, Gannon 3
After waiting 25 minutes to get underway, Slippery Rock jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a home run off right-handed ace Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area). SRU made it 3-0 in the top of the second on back-to-back doubles with two outs, but Gannon closed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning on Brandon Wetherholt's (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) fourth home run of the season, hit out of the park to right field. The Rock pushed across a run in the top of the fourth, then took a 5-2 lead with a solo home run in the seventh. Gannon answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) singled and scored on a single by Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). But an outstanding defensive play by the SRU shortstop foiled the rally. Hess was 2-for-3. Judy battled the elements to go six innings, allowing five hits and a pair of walks while striking out five against the top hitting team in the PSAC.

GAME 2 – Gannon 8, Slippery Rock 5
The left-handed side of Gannon's pair of aces, Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast), took the mound in game two. The graduate student labored through the first inning, walking three and allowing a pair of runs. He nearly got off the frame unscathed but gave up a two-run double with an 0-2 count and two out. Sapp settled in over the next three innings and Gannon took advantage of an SREU error in the fourth to send 10 men to the plate and push across six runs. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) reached on an error to open the inning and eventually moved up to third with one out on a single by Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside). Brandan Rea (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) drove in Kalbfus with a single, and Gagnon scored on Luke Callahan's (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) ground rule double to left. After a strikeout, Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, brining up Hess. The first baseman hit his fourth home run of the season and third this week with a grand slam to left center. He stands second in career home runs with 22. SRU scored twice in the fifth, but Sapp struck out the final two batters of the inning while clinging to a 6-4 lead with runners on first and third. Gannon scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) drove in one run with a single and the shortstop would come around to score on a double by Hess, his fifth run batted in of the game. Slippery Rock scored a run in the seventh, but Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) came in and got the final two outs on a popout and strikeout with the bases loaded for his first save of the season. Hess ended the game 2-for-5 with 5 RBIs to lead a 12-hit attack. Callahan was 3-for-3, while Rea and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) had two hits apiece. Sapp improved to 5-0 while pitching five innings. He saw his string of three straight shutouts come to an end while allowing four runs, but he limiting hard-hitti9ng Slippery Rock to five hits while striki9ng out 10. It was his second straight game with 10-or-more strikeouts.
