Hepditch Accounts for Six Points in 9-8 Loss to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team played its third straight one-goal game on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 9-8 decision to crosstown-rival Mercyhurst. The loss dropped Gannon to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC West, while Mercyhurst improved to 6-3 and 3-2, respectively.

While the result came up short of what Jennifer Pawlowski was looking for, the improvement for the Golden Knights under the third-year coach is clearly evident. The contest featured five ties and four lead changes.

Mercyhurst finally gained an advantage coming out of halftime, scoring the first four goals of the third quarter after Gannon rallied with a pair of late second-quarter goals to claim a 5-4 lead at intermission. Both came on free position shots by Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic). The sophomore would finish with a game-high four goals.

The four straight goals gave Mercyhurst an 8-5 lead with 6:49 left in the third quarter. Gannon closed the gap to 8-6 when Mckenna Woodworth scored off a beautiful pass from Hepditch with 5:53 remaining.

Gannon pulled to within a goal early in the fourth quarter when Hepditch scored again on a free position goal to close the gap to 8-7. The two teams would battle for almost seven minutes without a score until Kiera Boettcher scored her third goal of the contest to build Mercyhurst's lead back up to two goals at 9-7 with 5:57 left.

Hepditch scored yet another free position goal with 2:37 to play and the Golden Knights were once again within a goal at 9-8. They would have one more opportunity to score when Woodworth caused a turnover with under two minutes remaining, but the Golden knights would turn the ball over looking for the equalizer and Mercyhurst was able to run out the clock.

The well-played contest saw Gannon finish with 2 shots while Mercyhurst totaled 27. Gannon would end the day with 22 turnovers while the Lakers committed 14. The Golden Knights turned in a strong showing on draw controls with a 14-7 advantage.

Hepditch ended the day with four goals and two assists while Woodworth had a pair of goals and an assist. Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) found the back of the net once, as did Grace Cunningham (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas). Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) played all 60 minutes in goal and was credited with nine saves.

Gannon is back in action on Saturday, April 9 playing a PSAC West contest at Lock Haven.
