Gannon Headed to PSAC Tournament as Fourth Seed After Pair of Losses at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Gannon softball team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a pair of non-conference games at Lock Haven. Unfortunately, the Golden Knights will not enter the upcoming PSAC Tournament as head coach Michelle Wiley had hoped. They dropped a pitchers' duel in the first game, 2-0, then saw a late-game rally come up short in a 6-5 loss in the nightcap.

Gannon is 18-16 on the season and finished at 10-6 in PSAC West action. Friday's two losses at Mercyhurst ultimately dropped the Golden Knights into the fourth seed in the Western Division. Cal (12-4) finished as the top seed, with Seton Hill (12-4) second. Gannon and Mercyhurst tied for at 10-6 but the Lakers claim the third seed thanks to a tiebreaker. The PSAC Tournament gets underway at Quakertown, Pa. on Wednesday, May 4 and runs through Saturday, May 7.

GAME 1 – Lock Haven 2, Gannon 0
Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) and Madison Waltman battled in a pitchers' duel, with Waltman getting the best of Gannon's ace. DeMatteis would allow just two hits. One of those came in the third inning, when she was undone by a walk and a hit batter. The Bald Eagles scored both of their runs in the inning with none out. The graduate student limited the damage to just those two runs. She allowed just one other hit, a single in the fifth, while walking four and striking out four. Waltman, however, did not a allow a Gannon hit. She hit two batters, walked another, and one Knight reached on an error.

GAME 2 – Lock Haven 6, Gannon 5
The Golden Knights took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) led off the game with a single, and Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) followed with another base knock. A groundout moved both runners up, and Dietrick scored as Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) had an RBI single. Gannon then executed a double steal, with Sidare stealing second and Bush beating the throw home. Freshman Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) made her first career appearance and held Lock Haven without a hit. The Bald Eagles struck for four runs on four hits in the third inning, however. Gannon made it 4-3 with a run in the top of the fourth as Sidare singled through the right side to drive in Dietrick, who reached on a single. LHU opened the bottom of the inning with a home run, bringing in Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe). The Bald Eagles added a second run in the inning on a home run by the first batter to face Tatone for a 6-3 advantage. The Knights staged a rally in the seventh that would come up a run short. DeMatteis reached on a bunt single to open the inning, and Sidare followed with a single. They moved up on a passed ball, and with one out Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) drove in DeMatteis with a single up the middle. An error allowed Sidare to score and put runners on first and second but a pair of fly outs ended the game. Gannon finished with 11 hits as Dietrick, Bush and Sidare all went 3-for-4. Sidare drove in a pair of runs. Tatone allowed just one run in the final three innings, allowing two hits while striking out five.
