Golden Knights to Face PSAC West Rival Cal After Falling Late to East Stroudsburg in PSAC Tournament Opener

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. -- East Stroudsburg rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to hand Gannon a 4-2 defeat in the opening round of the PSAC Softball Tournament at Veterans Park in Quakertown. The tournament was delayed for four hours due to rain on Wednesday, with the two teams taking the field at 2:00 p.m.

Gannon, the number four seed out of the Western Division, dropped to 18-17 while East Stroudsburg improved to 34-9. The Warriors are the fifth seed in the PSAC East. The Golden Knights will face PSAC West top seed Cal on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in an elimination game. The Vulcans dropped a 4-3 decision to Shepherd. Gannon and Cal split a doubleheader this season.

Gannon's Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) and ESU's Katie Zaun were locked in a pitcher's duel for six innings, with the Golden Knights pushing across single runs in the third and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Knights got on the board in the bottom of the third with an unearned run. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) reached on an error by the center fielder with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) singled to center to drive in Vasi.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth as Gannon scored again with two outs. Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) opened the inning with a double to left center. The next two batters struck out, but DeMatteis helped her cause with a single down the right field line to plate Ryan. Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) followed with a single but both runners were stranded with an inning-ending pop out.

DeMatteis was three outs away from victory and had limited the Warriors to just two hits entering the top of the seventh. Katherine Donaghue opened the inning with a home run to left, and the Lexi Wright walked. A sacrifice moved Wright to second, and Molly Nies walked to put runners on first and second. Reilly Vicendese's double made it 2-2, and Sofia Cecchin followed with a two-run single. The Warriors bunched together three hits and three walks in the inning.

Dietrick began the bottom of the inning with a single, but Zaun retired the next three batters.

Gannon finished with six hits while DeMatteis limited the Warriors to five. The graduate student walked seven batters and struck out four as she moved to 8-9 on the season. Dietrick and Ryan were each 2-for-3.  Zaun ended the game with 11 strikeouts while improving to 12-5.
