Gannon Wins Three of Four vs. Mercyhurst with Sunday Split

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team won three of four games in their pair of weekend doubleheaders against crosstown rival Mercyhurst. After sweeping the Lakers by scores of 4-3 and 1-0 on Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium, the Golden Knights made it nine wins in their last ten games with a come-from-behind 7-5 win on the Lakers' diamond. Mercyhurst claimed the second game 3-0.

Gannon improved to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC West while dropping Mercyhurst to 14-6 and 4-4, respectively.

The Golden Knight bats were as cold as the day, managing just four hits. In fact, the doubleheader was delayed an hour after snow fell in the morning. Gannon would take advantage of eight walks and a hit batter to score seven runs in the opener. The nightcap saw Mercyhurst receive a brilliant pitching effort by Daniel Thomas, who threw a one-hitter.

Gannon will play its third doubleheader in three days on Monday, hosting Cal U in a makeup PSAC twinbill from March 26. First pitch at McConnell Family Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m.

GAME 1 – Gannon 7, Mercyhurst 5
The Golden Knights made the most of just three hits to rally from a 5-4 deficit and win their straight game against the Lakers. Jared Boyer turned in an outstanding effort in relief and Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) hit his fifth home of the season. Mercyhurst would plate single runs in the first and second innings against starter Jacob Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity). Gannon hit the Lakers with four runs in the top of the third. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) drove in Brandan Rea (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who had walked, with a sacrifice fly to left field. With two outs, Kalbfus pounded his fifth home run of the season to left field to plate three runs. Mercyhurst answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 lead and knock Visha out of the game. Boyer, a right-hander, got the final out of the third inning and held the Lakers without a run the rest of the way. Gannon regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of some wildness by Mercyhurst. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) reached on an error and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk to Wetherholt. One out later, Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) also walked with the bases loaded to give Gannon a 6-5 lead. The Golden Knights added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Zeroski poked a single to right with one out and scored on Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) RBI double down the left field line. Boyer, meanwhile, shut the Lakers down. In 4.1 innings he allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out two to improve to 2-0 on the season. The freshman had to pitch out of a jam in the fifth inning as Zeroski threw a runner out at home. He allowed a harmless single in the sixth inning and retired the side on order in the seventh.

GAME 2 – Mercyhurst 3, Gannon 0
Gannon succumbed to the one-hit effort of Daniel Thomas to see its three-game winning streak come to an end. Mercyhurst finally got to starter Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) (1-1) with an unearned run in the fourth inning and then scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, again taking advantage of an error to score an unearned run. Sophomore Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) came in with a runner on third and two runs in to keep things close. Reitebach got out of the inning with a strikeout, ground out and strikeout. He would allow a walk in two innings of work with four strikeouts. Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) broke up Thomas' no-hit bid with a two-out, infield single in the top of the fifth.
