Golden Knights Split with Cal While Playing Third Doubleheader in Three Days

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team played its third doubleheader in three days as the Golden Knights hosted Cal U in a PSAC West twinbill originally scheduled for March 26. The Golden Knights rallied from an early deficit to hand the Vulcans a 9-6 defeat in the first game before Cal pulled away late for a 7-1 win in the nightcap. The Golden Knights are now 13-6 overall and 5-3 in PSAC West action, while Cal is 18-8 and 4-4, respectively.

While the games were separated by over a week, the two teams split their four-game season series after Gannon split the opening doubleheader at Cal on March 25. They cam into the season tied for fourth in the coaches' preseason poll.

A weary Gannon squad will play for a fourth straight day on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Mansfield. The doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m. and will be played at Corning (N.Y.) Community College.

GAME 1 – Gannon 9, Cal 6
The Golden Knights found themselves trailing 4-0 after a half inning as the Vulcans started off with a bug inning against Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin Area). The redshirt junior was making just his second appearance of the season and first since March 1. The right-hander shook the rust off after that and allowed just one more run as the Gannon bats came alive. Gannon created a run in the bottom of the first thanks to Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). The sophomore led off the inning with a walk, would steal second, move up to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on Brandon Wetherholt's (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) ground out. Gannon tied the game in the bottom of the second courtesy of a three-run home run by Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon). The senior hit his third home run, a long blast out of the park to right, after Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) doubled to right center and Brandan Rea (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) walked. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) gave Gannon its first lead when he poled a solo home run to right center in the third inning. It was his team-leading fifth of the season. Cal would return the favor with a solo homer in the top of the fifth knotting the score at 5-5. Gannon sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four times. With one out Bielanin walked and Rea singled through the right side. Callahan walked to load the bases, but Trey Zeroski's (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) grounder to short forced Bielanin at home. The Golden Knights would bunch together three straight two-out. Vega gave Gannon the lead for good with a bases-clearing three run double just inside the third base line. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) followed with an RBI single to right center scoring Vega. Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) came in to throw the seventh, allowing a solo home run to the first batter he faced before retiring the side. Visneski evened his record at 1-1, going six innings and allowing eight hits. He walked four and struck out three. Vega drove in three runs and scored twice, while Hess was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

GAME 2 – Cal 7, Gannon 1
Gannon finally tasted defeat at McConnell Family Stadium after six straight wins as Cal's Jaret Muckley limited the Golden Knights to four hits in six innings. Freshman Matthew Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) got the start for Gannon and was trailing just 1-0 after four innings, with Cal pushing across a run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Graeber was able to pitch out of trouble in that inning, ending the inning with a strikeout with the bases loaded. Cal broke through for a pair of runs in the fifth on a contested home run to center field by Patrick Brogan. The long ball chased Graeber and the Vulcans scored four more runs in the final two innings against a pair of relievers. Gannon averted the shutout with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) started the inning with a double to right, moved up on another contested play, this one single to left by Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area), and scored on Ryan Kalbfus' (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) sacrifice fly to center. Wetherholt was the lone Golden Knight with multiple hits, going 2-for-3, while Kalbfus was 1-for-1 with a walk, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base. The third baseman made several fielding gems during the doubleheader, including one in the second game where he made a diving stop along the line, and while seated made the throw across the diamond to get the batter at first.
