Hess Ties Career Home Run Mark in Slugfest at Walsh

CANTON, Ohio Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hit a pair of home runs in Tuesday's non-conference game at Walsh, leaving the redshirt junior tied for the career lead for home runs at Gannon. Hess hit his 26th career long ball in the first inning, a two-run shot, then followed with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. That was his 27th career homer, tying the record held by Nate Cardy. Walsh would push across four runs in the bottom of the eighth then held on for a 13-11 win. Gannon is now 22-13 and Walsh 20-16.

The first baseman's second homer gave Gannon a 10-9 lead in the eighth inning in a see-saw affair which saw the Golden Knights jump out to a 6-2 lead midway through the nine-inning affair. The Cavaliers scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings and three times in the seventh to take a 9-7 lead.

Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) began the top of the eighth with a walk, and following wild pitch and a flyout, Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). Hess followed with his second home run of the game and ninth of the season as Gannon reclaimed the lead at 10-9.

Unfortunately, Walsh took advantage of three hits, two walks and a hit batter to push across four runs and take a 13-10 lead.

The Golden Knights staged a rally in the top of the ninth but ran out of outs. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) walked with one out and pinch hitter Andrew Bryan (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) drew a two-out walk. Cameron Vozel's (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) single to center brought Callahan home, but following a pitching change the game ended on a fly out to center.

Hess enjoyed a perfect day, going 3-for-3 with a career-high six RBIs. The first baseman now has nine home runs, which is tied for fifth in a season at Gannon. He hit 12 in 2019, good for a tie for second. In addition, he now has 98 career RBIs, good for eighth all-time.

Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) added three hits in four at bats, while Bielanin drove in three runs, matching his career high. Gannon totaled 12 hits and eight walks, but Walsh ended with 14 hits against six different pitchers.

Gannon returns to action on Friday, April 29 hosting Indiana(Pa.) to start a key four-game series with the Crimson Hawks. With the replacement of the artificial surface at McConnell Family Stadium underway, Gannon and IUP will meet on Friday at UPMC Park. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. as Gannon will celebrate Senior Day. The teams will play two more games on Saturday at IUP.
