Senior Day a Success with Sweep of IUP at UPMC Park

Judy Ties Record for Career Wins

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon parlayed a sweep of Indiana(Pa.) on Friday afternoon to take over sole possession of first place in the PSAC West. The doubleheader was played at UPMC Park in Erie, the home of the Detroit Tigers' Class A team the Erie SeaWolves. The Golden Knights improved to 24-13 overall and 15-7 in the PSAC West thanks to a 6-3 win in the opener and a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap.

While Gannon was taking two from the Crimson Hawks, Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock splits their doubleheaders with Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown, respectively, and are now 14-8 in conference play. An IUP team that is still in the hunt for one of the four PSAC West playoff berths is now 23-20 and 12-10 in the PSAC West.

Once again the Golden Knights rode their right-left ace tandem of Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) and Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast). Judy tied the school record for career wins with a gutty effort in the first game. He now has 20 career victories, tying the school record previously set by Josh Leslie.

Sapp took the mound in the second game and allowed just two hits while improving to 8-0 on the season, hurling his sixth complete game. The eight wins is tied for third in a season with Judy, who won eight games in 2019. Josh Peterson holds the school record with 10 wins in 1998. The southpaw also has 80 strikeouts in 57 innings, moving up to fifth in the season records. Judy holds the season record with 96, also in 2019.

The Golden Knights were celebrating Senior Day on Friday, with 12 seniors, including Judy and Sapp, making their final "home" regular season appearance. The games were played at UPMC Park with McConnell Family Stadium's artificial surface being replaced.

The seniors include Twelve seniors will be honored on Friday. They included: Alex Altmire (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch), David Ariza (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio San Jose), John Bender (Wilson, N.Y./Wilson), Cory Burroughs (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest), Jimmy Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Haedyn Csiszar (Seville, Ohio/Medina), Adam Malecki (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose), Brandan Rea (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin Area), Judy and Sapp.

Gannon and IUP meet again for a pair of games on Saturday at IUP's Owen J. Dougherty Field. The first pitch in game number one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

GAME 1 – Gannon 6, IUP 3
The Golden Knights pushed across six runs in the final three innings to make a winner of Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), with Kyle Borrello (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) coming in to hold off a late IUP rally. Judy improved to 5-1 as the redshirt senior pitched 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and all three runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Judy took a shutout into the sixth inning, with three Gannon runs in the bottom of the fifth inning giving the Golden Knights a 5-0 lead. Judy gave up a single to start the sixth, but got the next two batters outs.  Four straight hits knocked the right-hander out of the game, but Borrello came in and got the third out following a walk. Reitebach took over in the seventh and allowed just a walk while recording his third save. Gannon opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) opened the inning with a double to left that just missed going out for what would have been a school-record 28th career home run. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) followed with a single to right center moving Hess to third, and Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) reached on an error and following an out, Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) drive in Wetherholt with a single to right center.  The lead grew to 5-0 with three runs in the fifth. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) reached on a bunt single with one out and scored on Hess' second double of the game. It was the first baseman's 99th career RBI. Hess would score on a wild pitch and Kalbfus capped the inning with his eighth home run of the season to left field. After IUP cut the lead to 5-3, Gannon gave Reitebach a little breathing room with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) walked to open the inning, and moved to second on a Rakow single. Andrew Bryan (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) moved both runners up with a successful sacrifice, and Callahan scored on Cameron Vozel's (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) sacrifice fly to center. Gannon finished with eight hits, with Hess and Rakow each going 2-for-3. Kalbfus drove in a pair of runs, while Vega stole two bases to boost his season total to 28.

GAME 2 – Gannon 6, IUP 2
Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) improved to 8-0 with another impressive pitching performance. The left-hander limited the Crimson Hawks to two hits and Gannon's offense came alive late to post the sweep. Sapp would walk four and strike out seven while throwing his sixth complete game in nine starts. Gannon took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) led off the inning with a triple, but was still standing at third following a pair of outs. Brandan Rea (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) came up with the big two-out hit with an infield single to shortstop. IUP knotted the score at 1-1. The Crimson Hawks opened the inning with their lone two hits of the game and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Gannon regained the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the inning as Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) singled and Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) followed with another base hit, sending Vega to third. Hess stole second and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) added a single and stolen base in the inning, but the runners were stranded at second and third. IUP tied the game at 2-2 without the benefit of a hit in the fifth inning. Sapp battled some wildness, walking two and hitting a batter in the inning. The Crimson Hawks scored on a groundout to second but Sapp struck out the final batter of the inning with runners on first and third. He proceeded to retire IUP in order in the sixth and seventh innings. Gannon, meanwhile, scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and two more times in the bottom of the sixth. The first run in the fifth was courtesy of a Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) single, scoring Wetherholt, who had opened the inning with a double. Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose), who had reached on an error, added the second run on a throwing error by the catcher. Gannon added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, with Wetherholt again playing a key role. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) began the inning with a single and Andrew Bryan (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) walked. Hess loaded the bases with a walk and Wetherholt drove in Bielanin and Bryan with a two-run single to center.  While IUP was limited to two hits, Gannon pounded out 11 in the nightcap. Wetherholt was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, while Vega and Bielanin were also 2-for-3. Eight of nine starters in the lineup had at least one hit.
