Gannon Splits Saturday Twinbill to Claim Three of Four vs. Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Gannon earned a split of its Saturday doubleheader at Seton Hill to move a step closer to earning a spot in the PSAC Tournament. After sweeping Seton Hill for the first time since 2017 on Friday at McConnell Family Stadium, the Golden Knights made it three of four in the series, winning 5-3 in the opener before going down 5-2 in the nightcap.

Gannon is now 22-12 overall, and more importantly, 13-7 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill, the preseason favorite in the Western Division, is 24-14-1 and 10-10 in league play. There is now a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC West with Gannon, Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock all at 13-7.

The three wins in the four-game series is the first for Gannon against Seton Hill since the Griffins joined the PSAC in 2014.

Gannon returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 with a non-conference doubleheader at Walsh. The Golden Knights return to PSAC action on Friday, April 29 beginning a four-game series with Indiana(Pa.). The first two games are set for UPMC Park in Erie.

GAME 1 – Gannon 5, Seton Hill 3
Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) drove in three runs and Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) held off a late Seton Hill as Gannon won its third straight game in the four-game series. Seton Hill scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Gannon got on the board in the fourth inning when Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) hit a ground-rule double and Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) followed with an RBI single to center field. The Golden Knights gained the lead in the fifth inning when Callahan hit a two-run homer to right field. Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) hit a one-out double and Callahan followed on the next pitch with his fourth home run of the season. Gannon built the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Wetherholt opened the frame with a single to center, and with one out Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) hit a double to right center, moving Wetherholt to third. He would score on a wild pitch, and Callahan later plated Mejia with a sacrifice fly. The Griffins pushed across a run in the sixth, but Reitebach was able to limit it just one run. The righthander came in with runners on first and third, and after hitting the first batter he faced, the right-hander got the third out on a fly ball. In the bottom of the seventh, he retired the first two batters, but the tying run came to the plate following a walk. He ended the game with a force out for his second save of the year. Wetherholt was 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Callahan was 1-for-2 with the three RBIs, while Kalbfus was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jacob Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) turned in his second straight strong outing. The redshirt junior left hander went the first five innings to improve to 2-1, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out four.

GAME 2 – Seton Hill 5, Gannon 2
Seton Hill snapped its seven-game losing streak with the 5-2 win, holding Gannon to four hits. The Griffins scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings and pushed across two runs in the third inning. Gannon resorted to a bullpen game, with for pitchers going no more than 1.2 innings apiece. Gannon got on the board in the fifth inning when Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) hit a leadoff single and reached second on an outfield error. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Brandan Rea's (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) sacrifice fly. The Golden Knights scored their other run in the top of the seventh. With one out Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) walked and stole second. With two outs Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) doubled down the right field line to drive in Mejia.
