Gannon Sweeps Seton Hill for First Time Since 2016 with Eight-Inning Thriller, Dominant Effort by Sapp

ERIE, Pa. – As victories go, Gannon's doubleheader sweep of Seton Hill on Friday was pretty big. Gannon rallied to overcome a 5-1 deficit in game number one and hand the Griffins a 7-6 loss in eight innings in the lidlifter. The nightcap featured another superb effort from southpaw Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) as the Golden Knights pulled away for an 8-2 win.

The two wins boosted Gannon into a first place tie with Mercyhurst in the PSAC West after the Lakers split with Indiana(Pa.). The Golden Knights are now 21-11 under first-year head coach DJ Cannon, and 12-6 in conference play. Seton Hill suffered its sixth straight loss and is now 23-13-1 and 9-9 in the PSAC West. Gannon has not swept a doubleheader from the Griffins since 2016.

The two teams will play another two games on Saturday at Seton Hill. Friday's twinbill marked the final games at McConnell Family Stadium this season. They have one home doubleheader remaining against IUP, with those games being played at UPMC Park. They will play their final four games of the regular season at Pitt-Johnstown instead of swapping home-and-home dates. McConnell Family Stadium will be shut down after this weekend for installation of a new artificial surface along with other improvements.

GAME 1 – Gannon 7, Seton Hill 6 (8 innings)
The Golden Knights found themselves trailing 5-1 after three-and-half innings but battled back to take a 6-5 lead. Seton Hill opened the scoring with a home run in the first inning, but Gannon answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on an Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) single to drive in Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). Vega had singled and stolen second base. The Griffins two more runs, one unearned, in the third inning, then bunched three hits together in the fourth for two more runs. Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), who battled all afternoon, settled down after that and retired the next seven batters. While Gannon's right-handed ace was regaining his form, the Golden Knights came alive at the plate. Two runs scored on a long home run to right field by Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area), his sixth of the season, in the fourth inning. Gannon pulled to within 5-4 in the fifth as Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) singled and eventually scored on another RBI single by Hess. The Knights took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a two-run single to center by Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. The inning was kept alive by a bunt single by Andrew Bryan (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) to load the bases. The freshman was playing in his first game of the season and was inserted into the game as a defensive replacement in the fifth inning. Seton Hill promptly tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh when Neal McDermott drove Judy's first pitch over the center field fence. Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), who came in with two outs in the seventh, allowed just a walk in the top of the eighth. With one out in the bottom of the inning pinch hitter Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) reached on a single up the middle. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Vozel walked, and after a pitching change, Vega was intentionally walked to load the bases. That brought Hess to the plate, and he drove a fly ball to center field, with Gagnon sliding in ahead of a strong throw by McDermott for his third RBI of the day and the winning run. Vozel ended the game with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBIs, while Hess was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. He now has 92 career RBIs, moving into eighth place. Gannon finished with 12 hits in the opener.

GAME 2 – Gannon 8, Seton Hill 2
Gannon threw the second half of its right-left ace combo in game two, and graduate student Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) was brilliant. The lefthander improved to 7-0 on the season in dominating fashion. He struck out the side in the first and second innings and recorded 11 strikeouts in the first five innings. He took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before Seton Hill was able to come up with a contested hit on fly ball to left field. Shortstop Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) ranged into mid left field with leftfielder Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) racing in towards him. Vega was able to get his glove on the ball with his back to the infield but it fell for a single. The Griffins would get just one more hit, but it was much more legitimate. Jack Oberdorf hit a two-run homer to right center with two outs in the sixth. At the time that closed the gap to 4-2, but Gannon responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Brandan Rea (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) opened the inning with singles, and Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) moved them up with a sacrifice. After a second out, the inning stayed alive when Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) reached on a throwing error scoring one run. After a walk to load the bases, Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) followed with a two-run single to right field. Mejia's single to right center plated another run as Gannon's lead grew to 8-2. Gannon opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Bielanin was in the lineup due to an injury to starting shortstop Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny). The Knights scored two more runs in the fourth. Mejia and Rea walked and Mejia eventually reached third on a wild pitch. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) executed a squeeze bunt to score Mejia. Vozel then came up and drove in Rea with a single. The rest was all Sapp. He would throw his fifth complete game of the season in eight starts, allowing two hits and walking four while striking out 14, one shy of his career high. The seven wins are tied for fourth in a season, and he has moved up to eighth in season strikeouts with 74. Gannon had nine hits in the nightcap, with Kalbfus going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Mejia 2-for-3 with an RBI.
