Gannon Rallies Only to Fall in Overtime at D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The comeback kids were at it again on Saturday, but unfortunately D'Youville spoiled another monumental comeback by the Gannon women's lacrosse team. The Golden Knights rallied to send the contest into overtime, but D'Youville scored a half-minute into the extra session for a 12-11 win. Gannon falls to 4-6 with the tight setback while the Saints are now 5-5.

After McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) opened the scoring at 9:58 of the first quarter, D'Youville would grab the lead after one quarter and led for most of the way. Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored on a free position goal at the 6:23 mark to tie the match at 2-2, but the Golden Knights would play catch up the rest of the match.

D'Youville led 3-2 after one quarter and would build the lead to 7-4 at the half. Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) scored Gannon's first goal in the period on a free position shot and Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) notched the second.

Tufts added her second goal of the contest early in the third quarter to pull Gannon to within 7-5, but the Saints scored twice as Gannon trailed 9-5. Woodworth and Hepditch added free position goals as Gannon trailed 10-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.

As they did against Indiana(Pa.) and Slippery Rock, the Golden Knights mounted a comeback. Gannon scored the first four goals of the period to pull ahead 11-10 late in the contest. Stevens took a pass from Woodworth to make it 10-8 five minutes into the quarter, and with eight minutes left Woodworth pulled the Knights to within a goal, assisted by Hepditch. Stevens knotted the game at 10-10 with 5:56 remaining, and when Tufts found the back of the net with 1:21 remaining, the Golden Knights had climbed ahead 11-10.

D'Youville sent the contest into overtime with just 22 seconds to play when Marissa Malvaso scored her third goal of the match. Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) had held the Saints without a goal for 18 minutes up to that point. D'Youville then won just 31 seconds into the first three-minute overtime period on a goal by Sydney Gordon.

The contest was evenly-matched statistically, as well. Gannon had 25 shots compared to 30 for D'Youville. Both teams committed 19 turnovers, and Gannon finished with 14 draw controls and the Saints 13.
Woodworth had three goals and an assist, with Stevens and Tufts also scoring three times. Hepditch contributed two goals and an assist. Jess totaled 10 saves.
After playing its last non-conference game, Gannon returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 hosting crosstown-rival Mercyhurst in a PSAC game. The action gets underway at 4:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
