Jacobs Scores Four Goals as Gannon Falls to IUP on Senior Day

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team was hoping to send out seven seniors who were recognized in pre-game ceremonies as part of Senior Day with a win, but they were unable to upset strong Indiana(Pa.) squad. However, while losing 20-13, the Golden Knights showed they have come a long way even from early in the season.

The loss in the final game of the season at McConnell Family Stadium left the Golden Knights at 5-9 overall and 3-6 in the PSAC West with three contests remaining. IUP improved to 10-4 and 7-2 in the conference with the win.

IUP had defeated Gannon earlier in the year 17-6. This time around, the Golden Knights put a scare into the Crimson Hawks before they pulled away.

Gannon scored the first goal of the contest just 65 seconds into the game when McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scored the first of her two goals. IUP responded with five straight goals by four different players to take a 5-1 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Golden Knights were equal to the challenge, scoring the final four goals of the first period and then the first of the second to take a 6-5 lead. Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden), who led Gannon with four goals, scored the first two goals, with Skyler Parsons (Reading, Pa./Exeter Twp.) and Hannah Mowery (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) adding goals to knot the score at 5-5.

Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic), who has been Gannon's hottest scorer of late, opened the second quarter scoring at 11:51 for a 6-5 lead. Back came the Crimson Hawks, however, as they scored four straight goals and seven of the final eight in the quarter to take a 12-7 lead into intermission, The last came with just 2.7 seconds left in the half. Gannon had held IUP without a goal for over seven minutes prior to the scoring outburst.

The third quarter showcased defense, as IUP outscored Gannon 3-2 to hold a 15-9 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes. Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) accounted for Gannon's goals. When IUP opened the final period with a pair of goals, the Golden Knights trailed 17-9. They would score four of the next five goals, however, to close to 18-13 with just over three minutes remaining. Jacobs capped the min-run with her fourth goal. IUP closed out the contest with a pair of goals.

Jacobs led Gannon with four goals, adding an assist, while Woodworth, Mowery and Stevens found the back of the net twice. Woodworth added an assist. Tufts, Hepditch and Parsons scored one goal apiece.

IUP ended with a 34-25 advantage in shots, mostly on the strength of a 14-5 edge in the second quarter. Gannon had 21 turnovers and IUP 19. Both teams were efficient on clears, with the Golden Knights converting 15 of 21 and IUP 14 of 18. IUPO held a slight edge in draw controls with 20 compared to 17 for Gannon.

Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) played the entire game in goal for Gannon, registering six saves.

Gannon will return to action on Tuesday, April 19 playing at Slippery Rock. The action gets underway at 4:00 p.m.
