Gannon Ends Southern Trip with 21-10 Win over Malone

AUBURNDALE, Fla. The bats came alive for the Gannon baseball team on the final day of their southern trip to the Russ-Matt Invitational. The Golden Knights pounded out 16 hits, including seven home runs, and took advantage of five walks and four hit batters to rout Malone 21-10 on Saturday morning. They wrapped up their eight-game Florida trip with a 5-3 record and head north with back-to-back wins, beating a Malone team that came in with a 7-1 record.

Gannon scored in every inning but the first while posting the most runs since scoring 21 against Indiana(Pa.) on April 1, 2008. That included five runs in the fifth inning, followed by a nine-run sixth that gave the Golden Knights a 20-3 lead. It allowed first-year head coach DJ Cannon to reach deep into his bench.

There were plenty of heroes from an offensive standpoint. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) continued his impressive slugging with a 3-for-4 effort with four runs and four RBIs. He hit a pair of home runs, a two-run shot in the top of the third and another two-run shot in the top of the sixth, his fourth of the trip. Kalbfus added a double.

Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and three RBIs. He poled a two-run homer to open the scoring in the top of the second inning. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) and Evan Yandricha (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) also drove in three runs, each hitting their first career home runs. Bielanin was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and a double, Zeroski was 2-for-3 with a triple and an inside-the-park home run, while Yandricha was 1-for-4 with a three-run blast in the top of the sixth as part of the nine-run uprising.

Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) and Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) also had big games at the plate. Each had a pair of stolen bases, with Mejia going 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the seventh, the first of his career. Gagnon was 2-for-4 and drive in a pair of runs.

Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) started and went the first five innings to pick up his first win of the season. The lefthander scattered 10 hits without a walk. He allowed three runs and struck out four. Alex Gregory (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) threw the sixth inning, and Tommylee Sierra (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Luis Muñoz Iglesias) and Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) combined for the final three outs in the seventh.

The Golden Knights now head north and will return to action on Saturday, March 19  hosting D'Youville in a doubleheader.
