Kalbfus, Judy Lead Golden Knights to 6-4 Win over Ashland

KISSIMMEE, Fla. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) turned in an outstanding effort at the plate and Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) pitched into the seventh inning to lead Gannon to a 6-4 win over Ashland on Friday afternoon at the Russ-Matt Invitational. The Golden Knights improved to 4-3 while Ashland tasted defeat for the first time in falling to 4-1.

Kalbfus, a redshirt junior infielder, had accounted for three of Gannon's five hits in four at bats, scoring twice and driving in four runs. Judy, meanwhile, threw 6.2 innings, scattering 10 hits allowing three runs. The redshirt senior did not walk a batter while striking out eight.

Ashland would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Gannon came back with a pair of runs. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) walked with one out, Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) was hit by a pitch, and Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) walked to load the bases. Kalbfus followed with a single to right field to plate Zeroski, and Wetherholt scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the third, but Judy ended the frame with a strikeout. The Golden Knights grabbed the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then went up 6-2 when they pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Kalbfus scored the fourth inning run after singling. He would score on a double play. In the fifth, Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and one out later Wetherholt walked. With two outs, Kalbfus hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field, giving Gannon a 6-2 lead.

Ashland finally knocked Judy out in the seventh inning with three singles, the third with two outs to close the gap to 6-3. Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) came in and struck out the next batter with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Schott allowed just a two-out single in the eighth, but Ashland threatened in the ninth. After a strikeout to start the final frame, a double brought head coach DJ Cannon out to make a change, with righthander Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) entering. The sophomore allowed the one run to score, but he struck out the final batter to register his first career save.

Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) accounted for Gannon's other two hits with singles. Ashland ended the day with 13 hits.

Gannon has one more game remaining in Florida before heading north. The Golden Knights play a Malone team that is 7-1 on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.
