ERIE, Pa. – Gannon's comeback bid came up short on Saturday morning as Seton Hill held on for a 15-10 win over the Knights at McConnell Family Stadium.
Seton Hill opened up a 9-2 halftime lead and stretched the advantage to 11-2 at the 8:08 mark of the third quarter.
Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored both of Gannon's first-half goals to provide the only Knight offense early in the game.
Trailing 11-2 following two early second-half goals by Seton Hill's Skylar Orlowski and Jaclyn Frank, Gannon would begin a stretch of four-consecutive goals to cut the SHU lead to five (11-6) with 1:55 remaining.
Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) and
Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) each scored two unassisted goals apiece to spark the Gannon stretch.
The Griffins ended their scoreless stretch when Frank's found the back of the net for the third time at the 1:08 mark of the third quarter.
Gannon quickly responded when Tufts found the back of the net with just 25 seconds remaining in the third.
Gannon also scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to cut the Seton Hill advantage to three (12-9) with 11:54 remaining. Jacobs scored the first goal of the fourth quarter at the 14:24 mark, her third goal of the game and 12
th of the season. Less than three minutes later, Tufts found the back of the net with just under 12 minutes to play, her fourth goal of the game and 15
th of the season.
However, Seton Hill closed with a 3-1 scoring advantage to wrap up the victory. Franks, Grace Agnello and Orlowski provided the final three goals of the game for the Griffins.
Stevens added a late fourth-quarter goal for Gannon with just over four minutes to play. The goal was Stevens' third of the game and 19
th of the 2022 season.
Statistically, Seton Hill held a 33-20 advantage in total shots, including a 26-15 edge in shots on goal. Both teams committed 26 turnovers, while the Griffins held a 29-19 advantage in ground ball and a 19-10 edge draw controls.
Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) and
Kendra Delissio (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) combined for 11 saves in the Gannon goal. Seton Hill goalkeeper Kamille Ward earned the decision in goal for the Griffins. She had four saves.
Seton Hill was led offensively by Orlowski with six goals and one assists and Frank with four goals and four assists.
Gannon will now be idle until Wednesday, March 30 when Slippery Rock visits McConnell Family Stadium for a 4 p.m. PSAC West matchup.
Following Saturday's setback, Gannon is now 3-5 on the season, including 1-3 in league play. SHU improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in PSAC play.
