Gannon, Cal Open Series With Doubleheader Split on Friday

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Gannon and California (PA) battled to a split on Friday afternoon to open a four-game PSAC West series on a cloudy and cool afternoon at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa. The Knights edged Cal U with a run in the top of the seventh in game one to wrap up the 1-0 victory. In game two, Gannon led 1-0 after five and a half innings, before the Vulcans used an eight-run sixth inning to earn the split.

Following Friday's split, Gannon moves to 9-4 on the season, including 1-1 in league play. Cal U is now 14-4 on the year (1-1 PSAC West).

Game 1

In game one with the teams still scoreless after six innings of play, the Knights would get a runner in scoring position with Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) on second following a walk and passed ball. Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) then singled through the left side to send Wetherholt to third. Wetherholt would round third and continue home, where he was met with a close throw-out attempt from left fielder to the catcher. However, the umpire called the catcher for blocking home plate and awarded Wetherholt safe at home for the unearned run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gannon pitcher Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) retired three-consecutive Cal U batters to earn his second-straight complete game shutout. The last Gannon pitcher to record back-to-back complete game shutouts was David Cricks in 2018. During the victory, Sapp allowed just three singles and walked only one batter. He finished the game with seven strikeouts.

At the plate in game one, Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) led the Knights by recording three singles. Wetherholt and Mejia also had hits for Gannon in the win.

Game 2

In game two, Gannon once again grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo home run by Mejia to left field. The hit was one of just four recorded by the Knights in game two.

The 1-0 lead would remain until the bottom of the sixth inning when Cal U took control with an eight-run inning that was capped by a three-run home run from Jacob McCaskey. It was one of three hits that McCaskey recorded in the Cal U game two victory.

Vega, Wetherholt, Mejia and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) each recorded hits for the Knights in game two.

Gannon starter Jacob Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings and struck out five Cal U batters before surrendering five runs in the bottom of the sixth to get charged with the loss. Devin Foster pitched a complete game to improve to 4-0 on the season for the Vulcans. Foster tallied four strikeouts.

GU and Cal were scheduled to wrap up the four-game series on Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium, but the doubleheader has been postponed due to the threat of cold weather and snow on Saturday afternoon. A rescheduled date and time will be announced in the coming days.

Gannon's next scheduled game is now set for Friday, April 1 at Mercyhurst. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
