Women’s lacrosse blanks Edinboro, 23-0, to earn third shutout in program history

EDINBORO, Pa. – For only the third time in program history, the Gannon University women's lacrosse team completely kept an opponent off the scoreboard—and added 23 goals of its own to defeat Edinboro University, 23-0. Exceptional work on the draw (a 22-2 advantage for Gannon) led to plenty of possession to help keep the shutout intact, and the Knights also held wide statistical margins in shots (35-2), shots on goal (30-2), and ground balls (15-5.)

A shutout has been earned on only two other occasions in the history of the women's lacrosse program—and not since the 2010 season, when the Knights defeated Erskine College 23-0. The other occurrence, an 18-0 win versus Millersville University, took place on March 11, 2007.

Freshman Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) continues to impress in her first season and led the Knights with six goals on eight shots (all of them on goal) and nine draw controls, all of which were team-high totals. Another freshman, Addey Bischof (Erie, Pa./McDowell), chipped in with four goals (her season-high) while Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) each added three goals apiece. Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) scored a pair of goals and dished out a game-high three assists. Stevens has now scored 16 goals this season, second only to Woodworth (20 goals) for the team lead.

Five other Knights (Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden), Lauren Squires (Big Flats, N.Y./Horseheads), Lindsay Ball (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence), Bridget Tucker (Wynnewood, Pa./Harriton), and Skyler Parsons (Reading, Pa./Exeter Twp.)) all scored a single goal in the game. Sophomore goalie Kendra Delissio (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) started her second consecutive game in goal, played all 60 minutes, and notched a pair of saves.

Gannon got off to a quick start and established themselves early, scoring 11 goals in the first quarter. Stevens scored three of the first four goals for the Knights (Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) put home the other) to take a 4-0 lead with 6:55 remaining to play in the quarter. The offensive led to seven more goals in the period—averaging about a minute per goal—and included two each from Woodworth and Bischof.

Domination of the draw continued for Gannon and Tufts put home a goal early in the second quarter to make it 12-0. Additional tallies from Woodworth, Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic), and Parsons increased the gap to 15-0 with just 7:16 left to play in the first half. The pace of the game slowed and the only other goal in the quarter came from Bridget Tucker (Wynnewood, Pa./Harriton)—the first of her Gannon career—as Gannon headed into halftime with a 16-0 lead. The Knights added four goals in the third quarter, three of which came from Stevens, while Addey Bischof (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Lindsay Ball (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) were the team's only goal-scorers in the fourth quarter.

After a full day of rest, Gannon heads to Indiana, Pa. on Tuesday, March 22 for a matchup with the IUP Crimson Hawks at 4:00 p.m. The team's next home contest is next Sunday, March 27 at McConnell Family Stadium versus Seton Hill and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
