Stevens, Woodworth Score Three Goals as Gannon Opens PSAC Play vs. Lock Haven

ERIE, Pa. McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) scored three goals apiece as the Gannon women's lacrosse team opened PSAC action on Wednesday with a 15-8 loss to Lock Haven. The setback dropped the Golden Knight to 2-3 overall while Lock Haven improved to 4-1 with its fourth straight win.

Unlike Friday's home opener when the Golden Knights played their home opener in cold and snow, the two teams played on a sunny afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. Gannon would score the first goal of the match as Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) scored a free position goal at the 12:55 mark of the first quarter.

The Bald Eagles responded with five straight goals, leading 4-1 at the end of the first quarter and then opening the second quarter with a goal 65 seconds into the period.

Gannon answered three straight goals of its own. Woodworth, a sophomore, opened the run with goals at 13:04 and 11:50, the latter score assisted by Stevens. When freshman Stevens notched her first goal of the match at 8:42, the Golden Knights had pulled to within 5-4. Lock Haven scored the only goal after that in the period, a free position goal with 3 minutes, 38 seconds remaining to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.

The Bald Eagles outscored Gannon 4-2 in the third period to claim a 10-6 lead after 45 minutes. Their lead grew to 9-4 midway through the period with three goals to open the scoring in the second half. Woodworth broke the string with her third goal of the match and 17th of the season at the 5:35 mark. Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) found the back of the net with Gannon a man up two minutes later for her eighth goal of the season, pulling the Golden Knights to within 9-6. Lock Haven tallied the last goal of the period with 45 seconds left on a free position goal with a man advantage.

The score closed to 10-7 on Stevens' second goal, a free position shot, at 12:25. Gannon answered a pair of Lock Haven goals with another Stevens' goal, her 10th of the year, at 6:17. The Golden Knights would not score again, however, as the Bald Eagles tacked on three goals, two by their leading scorer Caitlin Morrow, to close out the match.

Lock haven finished with 39 shots compared to 30 for Gannon, including 26 shots on goal to 21. Both teams committed 26 turnovers, with Gannon successful on 10 of 18 clears and LHU 11 of 21. Gannon had 13 draw controls and the Bald Eagles 14.

Stevens ended with three goals and an assist while Woodworth had three goals. Tufts and Hepditch accounted for the other goals.

Kendra Delissio (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) got the start in goal, with the sophomore totaling 11 saves. Lauren Girardi was in goal for Lock Haven and had 13 saves.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, March 19 playing at Edinboro in another PSAC West contest. The action gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
