ERIE, Pa. – The sixth-ranked Gannon Acrobatics & Tumbling team won five of six events and took control in the second half on Wednesday evening against 11
th-ranked West Liberty, 269.170-245.300, at the Highmark Events Center in Erie.
Gannon began the event with a 36.30-34.45 advantage over West Liberty in the compulsory event, as the Knights outscored the Hilltoppers in each of the four heats to open the meet. Gannon scored an event-high 9.65 in the compulsory toss and added a 9.50 in the compulsory pyramid.
West Liberty earned a narrow win over Gannon in the acro event, thanks to a 9.30 in the five-element and a 9.55 in the seven-element. Gannon scored an event-high 9.60 in the five-element acro despite the narrow defeat in the event.
The Golden Knights got back on track in the pyramid event just before halftime, outscoring the Hilltoppers by a lopsided 29.20-25.70 margin in the three heats. The event featured Gannon's top two scores of the day as the Knights recorded a 9.90 in the synchronized pyramid and a 9.85 in the open pyramid.
Following halftime, it was all Gannon with sizable scoring margins in each event. In the toss, the Knights recorded a 9.70 in the 450 salto and added a 9.55 in the open heat to seal the event victory with a 28.25-25.80 scoring advantage.
The Knights also outscored West Liberty by over six points in the tumbling event with a 53.700-47.550 win in the event. Gannon's score of 9.25 in the duo pass highlighted the synchronized heats to begin the event. The Knights then capped the event with a high-scoring efforts in each of the solo athlete passes.
Michaelah Lanza (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) scored a 9.325 in the aerial pass,
Ali Price (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) chipped in a 9.525 in the six-element pass, and
Caitlyn Crawford (Reston, Va./South Lakes) highlighted the event with a 9.70 in the open pass.
Gannon wrapped up the win and improved to 6-1 on the season following a 93.87-83.90 scoring margin in the team event. Gannon's team event score was a season-best performance.
West Liberty fell to 4-2 on the year following the setback.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, April 2 at first-year program Kutztown. The meet is set for a 3 p.m. start time.
