ERIE, Pa. – Gannon Acrobatics & Tumbling will return home to host No. 11-ranked West Liberty on Wednesday evening at the Highmark Events Center. Wednesday's meet is Gannon's annual Make-A-Wish Meet.
During the Make-A-Wish Meet, fans will have the opportunity to support the cause by purchasing raffle tickets and/or a Make-A-Wish Meet T-shirt. Wednesday's meet will also be Kid's/Local Gym Day – with fans having the opportunity to meet the team and get autographs following the meet.
Gannon comes into the meet with a 5-1 record, including wins over two Division I programs and four nationally-ranked opponents this season. The Golden Knights are coming off a 275.690-271.270 victory over No. 3 Oregon on Saturday, March 5 at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore. The meet score was Gannon's highest since March 3, 2020 at Baylor. Gannon scored a 280.665 against the Bears.
Last Saturday at Oregon, Gannon was victorious in five of six events and outscored the Ducks in 13 of 19 heats during the meet. Gannon scored a 9.50 or higher in 15 of the 19 heats. The win over Oregon was the first in program history for the Golden Knights.
Against Oregon, Gannon scored a meet-high 9.95 in the inversion pyramid and a 9.90 in both the compulsory toss and seven-element acro. The Knights also recorded 9.85 in the compulsory pyramid and open pyramid, while adding a 9.80 in the open tumbling pass.
Prior to Gannon's win over UO, the Knights began their western spring break trip with a tri-meet split against No. 2 Azusa Pacific and No. 5 Hawaii Pacific. During the tri-meet, Gannon recorded the highest score in six heats, including an event win in compulsory.
Gannon was victorious by a decisive margin over fifth-ranked Hawaii Pacific, 269.965-251.771. In the head-to-head dual against Hawaii Pacific, Gannon outscored the Sharks in 17 of 19 heats and won all six events. The Knights held nearly a nine-point advantage over HPU in the team event alone.
Gannon's lone loss of the season came against the second-ranked APU Cougars, falling 275.600-269.965.
PRICE, HOFFMAN EARN NATIONAL HONORS FROM NCATA
After picking up two wins over nationally ranked opponents last week, the Gannon University Acrobatics & Tumbling team had two student-athletes earn week 5 national recognition from the NCATA. Sophomore top and tumbler
Ali Price (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) was named the association's Athlete of the Week, while senior base
Abbie Hoffman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was recognized as the Specialist of the Week.
Price, a sophomore top and tumbler from New Paris, Pa., competed in 11 heats and team event for Gannon during its two meets on the west coast last week. She began the week by leading Gannon to a win over No. 5 Hawaii Pacific during a tri-meet at Azusa Pacific. During the meet, Price helped the Knights to season high scores in the compulsory toss (9.95) and open toss (9.85/9.90) heats. Four days later, Gannon earned its first-ever win over Oregon as the Knights posted their highest meet score since 2020. Against the No. 3-ranked Ducks, Price helped her team to five season highs, including compulsory tumbling, acro seven-element, inversion pyramid, duo tumbling and six-element tumbling. She competed in the six-element tumbling pass twice last week, recording a 9.725 on Tuesday at APU and a 9.775 at Oregon.
Hoffman, a senior base from Grand Blanc, Mich., starred in the pyramid event for the Knights during a pair of wins over top five opponents last week. On Saturday evening during Gannon's win over No. 3 Baylor, Hoffman was a primary base in all three heats as the Knights set a season high score of 29.55 in the pyramid event. During Saturday's meet, Gannon scored a 9.95 in the inversion pyramid, a 9.75 in the synchronized pyramid and a 9.85 in the open pyramid. The scores in the inversion and open pyramids set new season highs. Earlier in the week during a tri-meet at Azusa Pacific, Price and Gannon recorded scores of 9.60 or higher in each of the pyramid heats during the meet.
THE GANNON-WEST LIBERTY SERIES
Gannon and West Liberty will compete for the fourth time since the 2017 season, with the Knights owning a 3-0 all-time record against the Hilltoppers. This will be the second meeting between the programs in Erie.
