Gannon Defeats Fairmont State, Falls to Charleston on Day Two of Spring Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Flor. – For the second straight day the Gannon softball team split a pair of contests while playing in The Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida. The Golden Knights opened the day with a 3-2 win over Fairmont State on the strength of a three-run home run by Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau), followed by a 2-0 loss to another Mountain East Conference team, Charleston(WV), in the nightcap. The Golden Knights are now 2-2.

Gannon has two more contests on Tuesday, playing Davenport at 12:15 p.m., followed by a game vs. Holy Family at 2:30 p.m. The Golden Knights will play a total of ten games in the Sunshine State.

GANNON 3, FAIRMONT STATE 2
The Golden Knights rallied for a win over a strong Fairmont State team thanks to a sixth inning three run home run by Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau). The two teams battled through four scoreless innings before the Falcons pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth, benefiting from a pair of Gannon errors. Caitlyn Kassay carried a shutout into the bottom of the sixth inning, limiting the Golden Knights to two hits to that point. Sophia Buckberger (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) opened the inning with a single, and with one out Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) doubled to right center to put runners on second and third. DeMatteis followed with a shot over the fence in left centerfield to give Gannon the 3-2 lead. It was Gannon's first home run of the season. Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) pitched around an error to lead off the top of the seventh inning to pick up the win. The senior came in at the start of the fourth inning and tossed the final four innings. She gave up a pair of hits and two unearned runs while walking one and striking out three. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) started and threw the first three innings, scattering three hits. Both teams finished with five hits, with Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and Maddie Krause (North Royalton, Ohio/Holy Name High) adding base hits for Gannon.

CHARLESTON(WV) 2, GANNON 0
Gannon engaged in another pitching duel against Charleston(WV) in game two of the afternoon. Both teams managed five hits, but the Eagles were able to push across two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Both runs scored with two outs, the first on an RBI single by Allysa Lake and the second on a perfectly executed double steal, with Hannah Rose coming home to score. Gannon baserunners would reach second base just twice against Danielle Bauer. The first came in the second inning when the Golden Knights had runners on first and second. The second came in the top of the seventh inning. Kennedy DeMatties was the tough-luck loser, going all six innings, scattering five hits while walking two and striking out four. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) was 2-for-3 at the plate, with Sophia Buckberger (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy), Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Maddie Krause (North Royalton, Ohio/Holy Name High) adding singles.
