Freshmen Hurlers Lead Gannon to 6-2 Win over Findlay

WINTER HAVEN, Flor. – Three pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Gannon baseball team improved to 2-1 with a 6-2 win over Findlay on Monday. It marked the second straight day the Golden Knights defeated the Oilers after outslugging them 11-8 in yesterday's season opener.

Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area), Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) and Marshall Murray (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) turned in a strong effort on the mound, combining for ten strikeouts. Whiteman, a freshman making his first career appearance, started and hurled the first five innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one earned, with four walks and six strikeouts. Boyer, another freshman, following and threw three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out four. Murray cleaned up, throwing the ninth inning and allowing a walk.

Findlay would jump out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Gannon pushed across a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), then grabbed a 5-2 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) opened the inning with a double and came around to score on Trey Zeroski's (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) second double of the game. With one out, Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) single plated a pir of runs, with Zeroski and Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), who had singled, scoring. After a Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) single moved Vega to third, Vega scored on Brandon Wetherholt's (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) sacrifice fly.

Gannon would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of three straight walks to Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), Bielanin, and Zeroski. Rakow's sacrifice fly made it 6-2.
Callahan ended the night 3-for-5, while Zeroski was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, and Vega was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Gannon stole four bases, with Callahan swiping a pair and Kalbfus and Vega one apiece.

Gannon returns to action on Tuesday playing at Rollins. The Tars are 10-2 and ranked 22nd in Division II. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
