Moccia Brings Home First Place at Bearcat Open, Pendergrass and Helm Finish Third

LEBANON, Ill. – The tenth-ranked Gannon University women's wrestling team had 13 wrestlers compete in the Bearcat Open on Saturday at McKendree University. Three Golden Knights earned medals, led by Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) who took home first place at 109 lbs. Kat Pendergrass (South Hill, Va./South Granville(NC)) and Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) finished third at 101 and 170 lbs.

Moccia won all four her matches, including an upset of sixth-ranked Natalie Reyna of McKendree. The freshman won by fall over Reyna at 1:38 in the finals. She reached the first place bout with a 5-1 decision over North Central's Angelina Graft. She picked up a fall and a technical fall in her first two bouts.

Pendergrass was 5-1 on the day, battling back from a loss in the quarterfinals to win three straight bouts and capture third place at 101 lbs. A sophomore who came in ranked eighth, won by technical fall in her first consolation match, then went on to close it out with three straight falls. She pinned Odelia Perez of Schreiner at 5:05 in the third place match after dropping a 6-4 decision to Perez in the quarterfinals.

Helm, a junior, ranked seventh at 170 lbs., posted a 4-1 record on her way to the third place showing. Three of her five matches were against ranked wrestlers. That included a 6-4 decision over eighth-ranked Fiona McConnell of North Central in the quarterfinals. She faced sixth-ranked Grace Kristoff in the semifinals, losing by technical fall, 11-0, but came back with two bonus-point wins. In the third place match she faced McConnell once again, and prevailed by technical fall this time, 11-0.

Anya Knappenberger (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur), ranked eighth at 130 lbs., reached the consolation semifinals before being eliminated. She ended the day with a 4-2 ledger.

The Bearcat Open wraps up the regular season. Gannon now hosts the NCWWC Northeast Regional on Sunday, February 20. Wrestlers from 12 teams will descend on the Recreation and Wellness Center, competing to qualify for the NCWWC National Championships on March 4 and March 5 in Adrian, Michigan.
