Mims Scores 13 Points in Loss to No.7/4 IUP

ERIE, Pa. Demetrius Mims (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) scored 13 points but it was not enough to hold a strong Indiana(Pa.) squad in a 77-48 loss on Saturday afternoon. The contest was the first at the newly-named Highmark Events Center. With the setback, Gannon is now 12-9 overall and 9-8 in the PSAC West. IUP, ranked seventh in the NABC Division II Top 25 and fourth in the D2SIDA poll, improved to 22-2 and 16-2, respectively.

Mims made 5 of 8 from the floor and was 3 of 6 at the line, adding a team-high six rebounds. Braden Olsen (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) reached double-figures for the sixth straight game with 10 points. Robertas Jonaitis (Pakruojis, Lithuania/Greater Beckley Christian School) and Lance-Amir Paul (Kingston, Jamaica/Putnam Science Academy) each contributed six points and six rebounds. For Paul, Gannon's leading scorer, it was the second game all season he has failed to reach double digits. The other also came against IUP.

Three Crimson Hawks reached double figures, two with area ties. Dave Morris returned home to the court where his father starred in the 1980's and finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds. As a prepster he set the Erie County scoring record while playing at Strong Vincent High School.
Armoni Foster, Meadville High School's all-time career scoring leader, added 11 points and eight assists. Ethan Porterfield contributed 17 points and seven rebounds.

IUP came in as one of the top defensive and rebounding teams in the country, and Gannon struggled from both areas. The Golden Knights shot 34.0 percent from the floor (17 of 50) and was outrebounded 47-34. Gannon held IUP to 36.8 percent shooting from the floor (25 of 68), well below their figure of 48.5 percent coming.

Both teams had a hard time connecting from beyond the arc. Gannon was 1 of 13 on 3-pointers and IUP 8 of 34. The Golden Knights almost did not make a 3-pointer for the first time since January 8, 2011 against Cheyney before Zach Cavanaugh drained a three with 1:32 remaining.

Gannon remained within striking distance for much of the first half before a 9-0 IUP run led to a 35-21 margin at the half. The Crimson Hawks would have another run, this one 14 straight points, in the second half.

The Golden Knights face another busy week as the regular season winds down. They will play three games in five days for the fourth straight week. It begins with the short trek down I-79 to play at Edinboro on Monday, February 14 before back-to-back games vs. Slippery Rock. The first is at the Highmark Events Center on Wednesday, February 16, with the latter at SRU on Saturday, February 19. The Edinboro game marks the sixth straight game in Erie County.

Gannon is currently a half game ahead of Slippery Rock in fifth place in the PSAC West standings, and four games in front in the win column over Edinboro for the sixth and final spot in the PSAC Tournament. IUP clinched a spot in the tournament with today's victory.
