Knights finish as runner-up at Northeast Duals

Both Lana Perez and Annabelle Helm finished 4-0 after all four dual meets.

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University women's wrestling team hosted the 2022 Northeast Duals and wrestled tough all day long, finishing as runner-up to Sacred Heart University after losing 25-20 in the championship match. Gannon's Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) and Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) (ranked No. 8 at 170 pounds) went unbeaten at 4-0 on the day, with Perez tallying three falls and a tech fall and Helm earning a single fall.

Four other Golden Knights finished with a 3-1 record after the duals, including Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) at 101 pounds (with two falls), No. 4-ranked 109-pounder Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) (fall, tech fall), freshman Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) (three falls at 130 pounds), and freshman Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) at 155 (with a fall and a tech fall.)

Gannon opened the tournament in Pool B with a 37-6 victory over Ursinus, winning the last six bouts that included falls by Bazemore, Perez, Ujfalvi, Helm, and Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) (who is ranked No. 7 at 170 pounds but wrestled up to 191 pounds.)

Next up for the Golden Knights was a 35-13 win over New Jersey City, buoyed by a pair of falls by Kitagawa and Perez at 101 and 136 pounds, respectively, as well as a technical fall from freshman Zoe Gaetjens (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore), 10-0, in just one minute and 49 seconds.

After winning Pool B, Gannon faced East Stroudsburg in the 1st-3rd place pool. The Knights claimed seven of the 10 bouts in a 34-14 victory, including falls from Kitagawa, Moccia, Bazemore, and Perez as well as a technical fall from freshman Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School).

Advancing to what would be the Northeast Duals Championship Match against Sacred Heart, Gannon had to fight from behind after falling behind 4-1 when Sacred Heart's Aaliyah Payne-Parris earned a tech fall, handing Kitagawa her first loss of the day. Moccia got the Knights rolling once again with an 11-0 tech fall of her own in just 1:00, but a forfeit at 116 pounds gave Sacred Heart back the lead, 9-5. A gritty decision by Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) at 123 pounds over Nohea Moniz, 4-2, brought Gannon to within two points, and the two teams traded falls at 130 (Sacred Heart's Alexandra Fitzgerald in 3:24) and 136 (Bazemore's third fall of the day in just 1:14.)

Perez gave the Golden Knights the lead, 17-15, after a tech fall at 143 pounds—but Sacred Heart responded once again with a fall by Madison Sandquist at 155 to vault back in front, 20-17. Helm stepped up at 170 and went the distance with Jacklyn Smith, holding on for a 3-0 decision to tie the match, 20-20 with one bout remaining.

The pressure was then on Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), wrestling up once again to 191 to face Cara Broadus. Gonzalez was quick out of the gate, snapping down a front headlock and collecting the far leg for the first takedown of the bout but Broadus recovered and was relentless in the second period, earning the fall in 4:27 to make Sacred Heart the 2022 Northeast Duals champion.
