Gonzalez Finishes Second at 170 lbs. at ESU Open

Nine Golden Knights place in season-opening tournament

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Gannon women's wrestling team opened the 2022-23 campaign, its second under head coach Breonnah Neal, with nine of 11 wrestlers placing in the 3^rd Annual ESU Open hosted by East Stroudsburg.

A total of 14 teams competed in the event with the Golden Knights finishing third with 23 points. Gannon is tied for 11^th in the NCAA NWCA Division II Preseason Team Rankings. Kings University, ranked second, finished first with 62 points. No. 13 Sacred Heart was second with 33 points and No. 14 East Stroudsburg came in fourth with 20 points.

Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) picked up Gannon's highest finish with a runner-up showing at 170 lbs. Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) took home third-place showings at 109 and 170 lbs., respectively. Freshman Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) was fourth at 155 lbs., with fellow freshman Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) fifth at 130 lbs. and Kendall McGarity (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) also fifth while competing at 191 lbs. Freshmen Jade Nguyen (Sacramento, Calif./Grant Union) (116 lbs.) and Samira Stephens (Geismar, La./Dutchtown) (170 lbs.), along with Stephanie Floor (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Leone) (143 lbs.), wrapped up Gannon's place winners with sixth place showings.

Gonzalez (2-1) won twice to reach the championship match at 170 lbs. against Chey Bowman of King, who is ranked second at 170 lbs. She defeated sixth-ranked Jacklyn Smith of Sacred Heart 7-2 in the semifinals.

Returning All-American and fourth-ranked Julianne Mocchia went 3-1, reaching the 109 lb. semifinals before falling 10-0 to Dianna Holmes of King. She came back with a fall in 27 seconds over Tiffin's Jenavi Alejandro in the third-place match.

Helm also fell to second-ranked Bowman of King in the semifinals after winning twice. She edged Sacred Heart's Smith 2-1 in the third-place match. The senior finished at 3-1.

Ujfalvi reached the semifinals in her first collegiate tournament, going 2-2 at 155 lbs. In the third-place match she faced seventh-ranked Skylah Chakouian of Elmira losing by fall at 2:56 after battling to a 4-4 tie.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, November 12 at the Adrian College Duals.
