Gannon Eliminated by Bloomsburg in PSAC Semifinals

Golden Knights drop 3-2 decision

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg rallied with a pair of goals in the second half of Friday's PSAC Semifinal match to hand Gannon a 3-2 defeat and likely end the Golden Knights' season. Gannon came in as the number two seed in the Western Division and is now 13-5-2. The host Huskies, the top seed in the PSAC East, moved to 14-4-1 and will face the winner of the Mercyhurst-East Stroudsburg semifinal in Sunday's PSAC Championship game.

The Golden Knights held a 2-1 lead at the half but were unable to add to the scoreboard in the second half despite several solid scoring opportunities. They were making their sixth straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament and were seeking a third straight trip to the title match.

Gannon jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 2 minutes, 4 seconds into the match as Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) scored his 23rd goal on a penalty kick. The senior midfielder fired the ball into the lower left corner after Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) had been tackled in the box on a breakaway. The play came just moments after a failed
Bloomsburg corner, with Samuel Alarcon's (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) long kick finding Katsande.

With the goal Del Castillo, the leading scorer in Division II, moved into third place at Gannon in season goals (23) and now seventh in season points with 50. The senior midfielder ranks sixth in career goals (52) and career points (120).

Bloomsburg would knot the score at 1-1 at the 32:40 mark courtesy of Liam Harmon's goal. Harmon gathered in a blocked shot that Gannon was unable to clear and just beat Alarcon to the left side of the net. The freshman goalkeeper got his finger tips on the ball but it rolled into the net.

The Golden Knights went back on top thanks to Shota Toyama (Kanagawa, Japan/Tama) just over six minutes later. After making an incredible save just moments earlier, Bloomsburg goalkeeper Brady Rimple mishandled Toyama's corner kick from the left side, with the ball dropping out of his hands into the left corner of the goal at 38:49. It was the second goal of the season for the freshman midfielder.

Bloomsburg knotted the score at 2-2 on a beautiful goal by Sammy Ames at 62:59. His left-footer from 20 yards through traffic just evaded a diving Alarcon, hit the right post and ricocheted into the left corner of the net.

Patrick Walsh accounted for the winning goal for the Huskies with just over ten minutes remaining. Olly Whitham's free kick from the far right corner found Walsh in front of the net, and he headed the ball into the middle of the goal at the 78:19 mark.

Gannon finished with a 19-15 advantage in shots, with each team taking seven shots on goal. Alarcon totaled four saves for Gannon while Rimple had four for the Huskies.
