MARSHALL, Mo. – It was a trying weekend of wrestling for the Golden Knights at the Missouri Valley Open, with nightmarish travel delays causing all kinds of interruptions to the team's normal routines. Sophomore Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) earned a podium spot after the grueling two-day tournament against tough competition, placing sixth at 109 pounds. Moccia wrestled seven matches in total, winning four by fall, and was one of 13 Golden Knight wrestlers to enter the brackets.
 
Moccia began her tournament with a pair of falls (over Leila Sidhu from Umpqua Community College and Candice Brickell from Hastings) to reach the quarterfinals, but lost a decision to unattached wrestler Emma Baertlein 10-6. She wrestled back strong with two more falls—over Iowa Central CC's Dianna Pineda in just 52 seconds and over Southern Oregon's Natalie Reyna-Rodgriguez in 2:48) and advanced to the consolation semifinal.
 
It was another closely contested bout, with Moccia losing another tight decision 8-3 to Iowa Wesleyan's Mia Palumbo before facing Emma Baertlein again in the fifth-place match and losing by fall in 3:52 to earn her sixth place spot.
 
Multiple other Golden Knights had success on the mats, beginning with Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) in the 130-pound bracket. She opened her run with a 3:00 fall over Addison Loney from the University of the Ozarks but dropped to the consolation bracket after losing by fall to Texas Wesleyan's Lexie Basham. Bazemore recovered with a tech fall against Madelynn Griffin of Ottawa University and a first-period fall over Grand View's Samara Lusk but eventually lost by fall in the fourth round of consis to unattached wrestler Adrienna Turner.
 
Freshman Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) had a strong start to her tournament in the 155 pound bracket with three wins, two by decision, but lost her next two bouts (including an 8-5 decision in the quarterfinals to India Page from Brewton-Parker College)
 
At 170 pounds, Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) dropped her first bout of the day to Campbellsville's Liliana Vergara but roared back with four straight victories after that, including three by fall. She bowed out of the tournament in round six of consolations by fall to Grand View's Abby McIntyre.
 
Fellow 170-pounder Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) began her journey through the bracket with three consecutive wins, including a pair of falls, but suffered two technical falls in her next two bouts—13-0 to Emily Cue from Simon Fraser in the quarterfinals and then 10-0 to Vianne Rouleau in the consolation bracket.
 
At 191 pounds, Kendall McGarity (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) also showed resilience after losing her first bout of the day to Grand View's Olivia Brown 6-1. She charged back to with consecutive falls to make it to the fifth round of consolations but lost by tech fall to Doane's Kenisha Jacsaint, 12-2.

The Golden Knights now return home and prepare to host nine teams at the Northeast Duals at Gannon University on Sunday, December 4.
