Gannon Celebrates Senior Night with 5-1 Win over Daemen

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team celebrated Senior Night by extending its winning streak to six matches in a row with a 5-1 win over Daemen on Wednesday night at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights are now 9-2-1 heading into Saturday's showdown for first place in the PSAC West with Mercyhurst. Daemen dropped to 4-4-2 and has now lost four straight meetings with Gannon.

The night began with Gannon honoring 11 seniors on Senior Night, and several of those seniors played a key role. The Golden Knights came into the game ranked second in Division II in goals scored with 42 and added five more to that total.

The Wildcats were able to hold Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) without a goal after the senior came in ranked number one in Division II in goals (18) and points (39). However the midfielder played a key role in setting up several goals.

Gannon opened the scoring with a pair goals 54 seconds apart less than ten minutes into the match. The Golden Knights had been pressuring Daemen in the early going and they finally found the back of the net on their fourth corner kick of the young evening. Sverre Orten's (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) corner kick from the right side found Paul Ferrer open on the right side of the goal. Ferrer, like Orten a freshmen, headed the ball past Daemen goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar from ten yards out for a 1-0 lead at 8:08. It was Ferrer's third goal of the season.

The lead grew to 2-0 at the 9:02 mark with Orten this time doing the honors. The play began with Toby Gower (Norwich, England/Long Stratton) gaining possession from Daemen in the midfield. His lone pass was brought in by Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo). Aanberg's crossing pass found Orten wide open on the left side of the goal, with Orten tapping it into the back of the net for his fourth goal.

Gannon scored two more quick goals late in the first half as the lead grew to 4-0. Aanberg scored his second goal of the season at 28:06 on an extremely difficult angle, with his shot from the near-post hitting off a defender and going past Escobar.

The fourth goal of the night came courtesy of the senior tandem of a Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) and Layton Bingham (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School). Katsande did the honors at the 35:17 mark. The play started with a give-and-go from Del Castillo to Bingham on the left side. He fed Katsande who was alone at the far post, resulting in his third goal of the year into the near corner.

Daemen closed the gap to 4-1 at 39:59 on Derek Bartlo's goal, assisted by Carlos Espana.

The lone goal of the second half was scored by Benjamin Querling (Zuelpich, Germany/Emil-Fischer Gymnasium), with Bingham picking up his second assist of the night at 81:02. The scoring play again started with Del Castillo who fed Bingham on the left wing. Bingham threaded a pass through the Daemen defense to Querling who chipped it in from close range into the left corner for his sixth goal of the season and a 5-1 lead.

Gannon ended with a decisive 28-7 advantage in shots, including 15-2 shots on goal. The Golden Knights had nine corner kicks compared to two for the Wildcats. Freshman Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) made his third straight start in goal and registered one save.

With Daemen the final non-conference game on the schedule, now the Golden Knights turn their attention to Mercyhurst and a string of six straight Western Division matches to end the regular season. The Lakers climbed to sixth this week in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 and improved to 11-0-1 on Wednesday with an 8-0 win over Shepherd. The two square off with first place in the PSAC West on the line at 3:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday, October 8.
