ERIE, Pa. – Gannon University cross country coach Rob Ahren's will get his first taste of the Gannon-Mercyhurst rivalry on Saturday morning when the two crosstown rivals will compete in the Race in the Park at Pleasant Ridge Park in Fairview, Pa.

The two teams will be the only ones competing on Saturday, with the women's 5K race to start at 11:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 11:45 p.m.

A year ago the Mercyhurst men edged Gannon 27-28 with the Lakers' Joe Groth capturing the individual crown. While the Golden Knights were missing several key runners for various ailments, Jacob Lehotsky (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) came in second and Matthew Queiroz third.

Neither runner returns, but Gannon's top two runners all season long look to be at the head of the pack. Ely Personius (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) came in sixth and Caleb Mandel (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) was seventh. The order has been reversed in every race this season, with Mandel coming off a third-place showing at the Ed Winrow Invitational hosted by Mansfield.

A senior, Mandel posted person record while finishing first among the college runners with a time of 25:49.9 over the 8K course. The first two runners were an unattached competitor and a Mansfield alumnus. For his efforts Mandel was selected the PSAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

On the women's side Gannon had a pair of top-ten finishers last week at the Ed Winrow Invitational. In fact, the senior duo of Emma Steele and Cait O'Rourke have been Gannon's top two finishers in each race. However, it was Steele getting the best of Cait O'Rourke. They finished eighth and ninth respectively.

Gannon dominated Mercyhurst a year ago in the Race in the Park finishing with 16 points to 43 for the Lakers. The top four finishers were Golden Knights, with two of those runners returning. Meredith Morse has moved on after capturing the individual crown. O'Rourke came in second and Lauryn Thompson was third.
