Del Castillo First-Half Goal Holds Up as Gannon Shuts Out Slippery Rock 1-0

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon wrapped up a four-game homestand with a narrow 1-0 win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday night at a windy McConnell Family Stadium. The victory boosted Gannon to 10-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the PSAC West, while the Rock is 4-7-1 and 2-4-0 after suffering a fifth straight loss.

Gannon remained in a tie with Seton Hill for second place in the PSAC West with 4-1-1 records and 13 points, two behind league-leader Mercyhurst. The Golden Knights and Griffins play on Saturday, October 15 in Greensburg, Pa.

Gannon swept the regular season series with The Rock after posting a 2-0 win in late September. The Golden Knights are now 8-0-1 in the last nine meetings with Slippery Rock.

Most of the contest was played in Gannon's attacking end but a game Slippery Rock squad allowed just the one goal late in the first half. The Golden Knights finally broke through on the scoreboard at the 38:39 mark. Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) fed a sprinting Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) in the deep right corner of the box. Knox chipped the ball to Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain), who fired a shot into the right corner of the goal past SRU goalkeeper Hossam Aly.

For Del Castillo it was the senior midfielder's Division II-leading 19th goal of the year. He also leads the country with 42 points. Del Castillo's 19th goal moves him into a tie for sixth place in Gannon's season records. He now has 48 career goals and 112 career points, both good for sixth all-time.

Despite leading in shots 12-0, in shots on goal at 5-0, and in corner kicks by a 5-2 margin, the score remained 1-0 at the half.

Gannon continued to control play in the second half but The Rock nearly came up with a break to score the tying goal in the 62nd minute. Gannon goalkeeper Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) gathered in a long kick but the freshmen was standing outside the box. Slippery Rock was awarded a free kick but Alex Plimmer's kick sailed over the goal.

The Golden Knights ended the evening with a 19-3 advantage in shots, including 7-0 in shots on goal. They had 11 corner kicks to three for Slippery Rock.
Alarcon recorded his second shutout since taking over in goal five games ago. Aly had six saves in goal for The Rock.
