WHEELING, W.Va. – Gannon's
Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) scored two goals as the Golden Knights picked up a 2-0 shutout victory over Wheeling University on Saturday afternoon in nonconference action at Bishop Schmitt Field in Wheeling.
Gannon improved to 5-1 on the season with the win. Wheeling falls to 3-3 on the year.
Both of Katsande's goals came in the second half, starting with an unassisted goal in the 51
st minute to break the scoreless tie. His second goal was assisted by
Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) in the 72
nd minute to give the Golden Knights some breathing room. Katsande now has a team-high five goals on the season. Aanberg now has two assists during the 2021 season.
Gannon held an 18-15 advantage in total shots during the game, but Wheeling had an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal. GU also held a sizable 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Gannon's offense ran through Katsande, who recorded three shots on goal during the win.
Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain/) and
Lennox Crews (Offenbach, Germany/Leibnizschule) each recorded two shots on goal during the game.
Hugo Rodriguez and Miguel Martin each had two shots on goal for the Wheeling offense.
David Syntelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende) and
Maximiliano Rocco (Florence, S.C.) split time in the Gannon goal this afternoon, with Rocco playing the final 75 minutes and recording nine of Gannon's 11 saves. Today's shutout was the second of the season for GU's defense with the other coming during the season-opening win over Tiffin earlier this season.
Gannon will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 29 with a road match at Bloomsburg. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. The Bloomsburg match is the third of five-straight road games for the Golden Knights.
