Volleyball Now 10-2 After Five-Set Loss to #19 West Florida, Win over Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Gannon University volleyball won three of its four matches in the FMU Invitational after splitting its two contests on Saturday.  The Lady Knights are now 10-2 after suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat to 19th-ranked West Florida (25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 25-18, 5-15), snapping a six-match winning streak, then coming back to defeat host Francis Marion in three sets, 30-28, 25-12, 25-23.

Both of Gannon's losses have now come to nationally-ranked teams in five sets. The Lady Knights earlier lost in five sets to Nebraska-Kearney in the Molloy Tournament. Nebraska-Kearney was ranked fourth at the time and is currently ranked number one in the country.

Gannon has one more road match, playing at Indiana(Pa.) to open up PSAC West action on Tuesday, September 21, before finally ending its 13-match road swing to start the season. Gannon will host Seton Hill on Homecoming on Saturday, September 25 at 2 p.m. at the Hammermill Center.

Its back to work for head coach Matt Darling and his squad.  "We hoped for a better day, but we'll accept the results and move on to the next one," Darling commented.  "With a conference match on Tuesday, we have no choice but to recover as well as we can, watch as much video as possible, and get ready to complete at IUP."

#19 WEST FLORIDA 3, GANNON 2 (25-23, 24-26, 19-25, 25-18, 5-15)
The Lady Knights fell just shy of upsetting 19th-ranked West Florida (11-1) while seeing their six-match winning streak snapped. Just as in the Nebraska-Kearney match, each set was tight, save for the fifth when the Argonauts were able to pull away. After winning the first set, 25-23, the Lady Knights rallied from a 20-13 deficit to knot the match at 24-24 on a service ace by Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson). West Florida would manage to score the next two points and knot the sets at one apiece. In the third set, West Florida ran off the final six points after the match was tied at 19-19 for a 25-19 win. The highly competitive set featured 10 ties and six lead changes. Gannon would send the match to a fifth set with a 25-18 triumph in a set that had six ties and four lead changes. Holding a slim 18-16 advantage, Gannon would outscore the Argonauts 7-2 the rest of the way. Sampson ran off three kills in that stretch. Gannon scored the first two points of the fifth set before West Florida pulled away, scoring the final five points. Sampson, a senior outside hitter, finished with a season-high 21 kills, adding 2 block assists. Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) had a season-high 16 kills, and freshman Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) was in double digits with 10. She added 18 digs and a pair of block assists. Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) contributed 54 assists and 25 digs. Freshman Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) totaled 18 digs and 4 service aces. While Katie Becht (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had 10 digs.

GANNON 3, FRANCIS MARION 0 (30-28, 25-12, 25-23)
Gannon posted its ninth win in three sets while having to work to put away host Francis Marion.  The Lady Knights prevailed 30-28 in a first set that included 10 ties and 3 lead changes. They would break a 28-28 tie with kills by Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) and Sampson. Gannon would dominate the second set, then faced another battle in the third set. There would be 7 ties and 3 lead changes, with Francis Marion scoring three straight points to forge the last tie at 23-23.  Gannon would score the next two points on a pair of attack errors.  Sampson finished with 16 kills and .389 hitting percentage, boosting her career total to 973 kills.  McClung had 11 kills and Deinek 9 kills and 8 digs. Beyers was credited with 36 assists along with 7 digs and 4 total blocks. Hall led the Lady Knights with 20 digs.
