Sampson, Kerestes Lead Lady Knights Past IUP in PSAC Opener

INDIANA, Pa. – The Gannon University women's volleyball team opened up action in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with an impressive showing on Tuesday night. While concluding a stretch of 13 straight matches on the road, the Lady Knights posted a 3-0 win at Indiana(Pa.) to improve to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC West. IUP is 7-7 and 0-1, respectively.

The three-set win had been a common theme for the Lady Knights, as ten of their 11 wins have come in three sets. In fact, they have dropped just seven sets all year. Gannon prevailed at IUP by scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-17.

"It's always a good feeling when you earn a conference road win, and I'm especially proud of the team tonight," commented head coach Matt Darling.  "We had a long weekend and traveled a great distance, but we were pretty sharp throughout the match.  IUP had a nice crowd tonight, too, and we played well enough to keep them mostly out of the match.  We had some great individual performances from Lauren (Sampson), (Ashley) Kerestes, and (Ashley) McClung, and (Ashley) Beyers moved the ball well tonight."

Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) paced Gannon with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Kerestes hit an astonishing .571, while Sampson wasn't far behind at 5.50.  Gannon hit .351 as a team while holding IUP to .098. Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) had 8 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Sampson, a senior outside hitter, boosted her career total to 989 kills, leaving her 11 shy of becoming the 18th Gannon player with 1,000 kills.

Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) was credited with 34 assists and tied with freshman Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) for the team lead in digs, each finishing with 10. Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) had 9 digs and fellow freshman Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) 8. Gannon totaled 7 service aces, including 3 by Madde Blake (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central).

Now the Lady Knights turn their attention to finally playing at home. They debut at the Hammermill Center on Saturday, September 25 hosting Seton Hill. The Homecoming match gets underway at 2 p.m.
