Goals hard to come by as Gannon draws 0-0 with IUP

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University women's soccer team notched its second consecutive 0-0 draw after another marathon 110 minute match on Saturday afternoon, this time with the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Golden Knights also battled Mercyhurst to a scoreless result on Wednesday night at McConnell Family Stadium and the team's record now moves to 1-1-2, all of which have been PSAC contests.

Both teams created clear-cut scoring chances in Saturday afternoon's matinee match, including in the 24th minute, when Gannon's Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) slotted a perfect through ball to Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria), creating a brilliant chance, but the shot carried just inches left of the post.

IUP threatened on multiple occasions, but none more impactful than during the second overtime, in the 105th minute, when a Crimson Hawks counterattack forced Gannon goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) off her line and out of the penalty box. Solymosi got to the ball and denied the clean shot but made plenty of contact with the potential shooter, earning a straight red card and forcing the Golden Knights to bring Jordan August (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) into the game at goal and desperately defend with just 10 players for the final five minutes of the game.

Gannon's offensive and possession totals remain impressive, with 28 shots (12 on target) compared to IUP's 10 (seven on target.) The Golden Knights held a slight advantage in corner kicks (3-2) and forced IUP goalkeeper Samantha Gildner to make 12 saves.

Next up for Gannon is a road match with the Vulcans of Cal (Pa.) on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 6:00 p.m.
