Gannon Runs Win Streak to Six in a Row with Two Victories at FMU Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Gannon University volleyball team pushed its winning streak to six straight matches with a pair of victories on the opening day of the FMU Invitational, hosted by Francis Marion at the Smith University Center. The Lady Knights improved to 9-1 with a 3-0 win over Queens(NC) (25-13, 25-20, 25-21), followed by a 3-0 triumph over Mount Olive (25-16, 25-13, 25-20). Eight of their nine wins have now come in three sets,

"We feel good to pick up two wins today," commented head coach Matt Darling.  "We had good performances from Lauren (Sampson) and (Ashley) McClung in the early part of the day, and that kept us in a good position until our defense, middle attack, and blocking got going.  Now we will get focused on playing a very strong West Florida team, and I think both teams are looking forward to that competition.  It should be fun."

Gannon faces a showdown with 19th-ranked West Florida (9-1) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., then wraps up the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match against host Francis Marion (3-7). The Lady Knights' lone loss is a five-set setback to a Nebraska-Kearney team that was ranked fourth at the time and now sits atop the AVCA Division II rankings.
