Gannon Wins Twice at Clarion Invitational as Greenfield Named MVP, Blake Lands Spot on All-Tournament Team

CLARION, Pa. – Led by tournament MVP Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) and All-Tournament selection Madde Blake (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central), the Gannon women's volleyball team won all four of its matches in the Clarion Invitational. The Lady Knights are now 7-1 after a 3-1 win over Northwood (25-14, 24-26, 25-13, 25-9) and a 3-0 victory over Salem (25-11, 25-12, 25-12). They have now won five of their seven matches in three sets.

Greenfield, a redshirt junior middle blocker, enjoyed a strong first day and had five service aces in the win over Northwood. She did not play against Salem as head coach Matt Darling relied on his bench.  Blake, a sophomore outside hitter, set a career high in kills on Friday against Lock Haven with 16, then had 14 today vs. Salem.

The Lady Knights figure to face a stern test this coming weekend when they play in the Francis Marion Tournament on Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18. They will play Queens(NC) and Mount Olive on Friday, followed by a match with a nationally-ranked West Florida team and host Francis Marion on Saturday.

GANNON 3, NORTHWOOD 1 (25-14, 24-26, 25-13, 25-9)
After splitting the first two sets, Gannon dominated the final sets to hand Northwood its first loss after the Timberwolves had opened the season with five wins in a row.  The Lady Knights actually trailed in the third set, 7-6, before running off seven straight points to take a 13-7 lead. That was as close as the Timberwolves would get.  Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) led Gannon with 14 kills with a .324 hitting percentage. Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) was also in double digits with 10 kills. Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) contributed 40 assists, 10 digs, and 3 total blocks. Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led the defensive effort with 19 digs. Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) was credited with 5 block assists and Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) had 4.

GANNON 3, SALEM 0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-12)
Head coach Matt Darling made liberal use of his reserves in a match which saw Gannon lead from start to finish, literally. They never trailed and the match was never tied. Madde Blake (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) registered a team-high 14 kills, along with 6 digs, 2 service aces and a pair of block assists. Freshman Hailey Koch (Littleton, Col./Dakota Ridge) had 9 kills and 4 block assists. Senior Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) took over at setter and finished with 31 assists and 16 digs. Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) added 14 digs and Katie Becht (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had 12. Both are seniors.
