ERIE, Pa. — Making the quick trip across town, the Gannon men's soccer team fell 4-1 to Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon to continue its spring season.
The Golden Knights (3-3-0) played a man down for much of the contest due to an early red card on an unlucky handball in the box in the 20th minute. The Lakers converted the penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead, and added a second goal late in the half.
A strike from
Bek Nurlanbek Uulu (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Loughborough College) off a long cross from
Charlie Petersen (Erie, Pa./McDowell) in the 57th got Gannon on the board and pulled the Knights to within 2-1. That score held until the 71st, when Mercyhurst cashed in on a corner kick. The Lakers got an insurance goal late on a counter that left a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper.
David Syntelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende) made six saves in goal for the Golden Knights. It was the first goal of the season for Uulu, and the first assist of Petersen's career.
Note: Mercyhurst did not provide statistical coverage of Saturday's game. A full box score will be available soon.
Gannon is back in action on Sunday, April 11, wrapping up its spring season with a home game against Roberts Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
Beginning Saturday, March 20 and running weekends (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) through Sunday, April 25, each Gannon student-athlete participating in the day's contests will be permitted two family members or members of their immediate pod to attend home events at Gannon University.
