KEY SEQUENCE
  • A five-goal run to close the first half put Gannon in the driver's seat, but a flurry of five straight in a span of less than three minutes after D'Youville made it 5-3 early in the second half pushed the Golden Knights to a big lead that it would only increase the rest of the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two defenses were strong early, forcing turnovers on seven consecutive possessions before the hosts got on the board first five minutes in. The Saints doubled their lead with 22:04 left in the opening half, but Gannon forced a shot clock violation and came back down the other way to notch their first goal on a free-position shot from Maddie Krock (Granville, Ohio/Granville).
  • Gannon didn't allow a shot for the next seven minutes, and when the Saints finally got one off, Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made the save, and a turnover got the ball moving the other way. Hannah Mowery (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) tied things up with 10 minutes to go in the half, and another Renwick stop started a counter attack that saw McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
  • Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) netted the final two goals of the half to close Gannon's 5-0 run and give the guests a 5-2 lead at the half. The Saints cut into that lead with a goal just 49 seconds into the second half, but Gannon then tore off another five straight.
  • Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) netted two goals around one from Woodworth, all without D'Youville getting the ball, as Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) and Jacobs grabbed draw controls. Hepditch forced a turnover after the Saints won the next draw, leading to another Tufts goal, and Hepditch added one of her own to suddenly make it a 10-3 Gannon lead just three-plus minutes into the second half.
  • D'Youville stopped the run a couple minutes later, but Tufts and Woodworth added two straight to make it 12-4. The closest the Saints got the rest of the way was 12-6 midway through the second half, but Mowery found Hepditch for a goal, Alexandra Kehrig (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) picked up a ground ball, and Jacobs notched another finish to push the lead back to eight within the next two minutes.
  • Lindsay Ball (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) helped keep the streak going, with Woodworth adding a pair and Tufts capping the scoring in the final minutes as the Golden Knights kept the Saints from climbing back in it.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon set season highs in nearly every statistical category in notching its first win of the season. That included 18 goals, seven assists, 33 shots, 27 shots on goal, 32 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers.
  • The Golden Knights scored 18 goals twice last season, but it would take going back to the first game of the 2018 season to eclipse that total, when Gannon topped Palm Beach Atlantic 21-6.
  • Tufts snapped the longest scoreless streak of her career — just two games — in a big way, notching five goals for a new season high, just one off her career high. That came on just six shots, in addition to three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Woodworth also notched five goals for a new career high. That gives the freshman a bump to 18 on the season to continue leading the team. She also added a career-high three assists for a team season-high of eight points on the day to go with a pair of ground balls.
  • Jacobs contributed three goals, her second three-goal game of the season. The sophomore also led with a career-high six ground balls, the most in a game by a Gannon player since 2018, and nine draw controls.
  • Hepditch turned in two goals as well as four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
