Wetherholt Home Run Pushes Gannon Past Lake Erie in Home Opener, 4-2

  • The Short Story: Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) smashed a two RBI home run in the fifth inning to push Gannon past Lake Erie, 4-2, on Monday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first frame, Reed Collins connected on a home run to left field to put the Storm on the scoreboard first, 2-0. Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) answered back to the Golden Knights in the bottom half of the inning with a single to center field to score Tyler Mattocks (Titusville, Pa./Maplewood) and Wetherholt and lock the contest, 2-2.
  • The game then went scoreless for two innings until Wetherholt delivered his first home run of the season to right field to score Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) and steal the lead, 4-2.
  • Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin Area) checked in on the mound of Jacob Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) in the seventh and immediately went to work firing six strikeouts over the final three innings to help Gannon pick up the 4-2 win.
GAME NOTES
  • With the win, Gannon improves to 2-1 overall on the season. It also marked the Knights' first win at McConnell Family Stadium since May 4, 2019 after not playing a home game last season due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
  • As a team, Gannon totaled 12 hits and four RBI.
  • Wetherholt posted a game-high four hits with two RBI and one home run. It marked his first home run of the season and fourth of his career.
  • Gagnon tallied three hits with one double and one triple. He also added two RBI to his stat line.
  • Visha earned his first career win and tossed six strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
  • Visnesky picked his first career save throwing six strikeouts over the final 3.0 innings.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon will travel to Jefferson to open up a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
